Two explosions took place in a beauty salon and a grocery market in Xinhe county, Aksu prefecture at around 6:40 pm Friday. Egyptian embassy staff 'seized'in Libya

The four people kidnapped on Saturday all worked at the Egyptian embassy in Tripoli At least four Egyptian embassy personnel have been kidnapped in the Libyan capital Tripoli, the Libyan foreign ministry says. Another embassy official was seized in the Libyan capital on Friday. Several kidnappings of officials in Libya recently have been blamed on militias. They are often paid by the government, but their allegiance and who controls them remain in doubt. On Friday a Libyan militia commander was arrested in Egypt. Shabaan Hadiya is the leader of the Revolutionaries' Operation Room, one of the militias that sprang up during the fight to topple Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Libyan government officials blamed the Operation Room for the brief abduction of Prime Minister Ali Zeidan in October 2013. Among the Egyptian embassy staff seized overnight was the cultural attache. An administrative adviser was abducted on Friday. A high-ranking member of the Operation Room denied any in

Philippines and Muslim rebels reach agreement

Image
Saturday's agreement was signed in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur The Philippines has agreed the final section of a peace deal with Muslim rebels fighting a long-running insurgency in the south of the country. It is the fourth part of a roadmap for peace with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) set out in October 2012. The accord details how the rebels will hand over their weapons in exchange for self-rule in parts of the south. The agreement, reached in Kuala Lumpur, paves the way for a final and comprehensive peace treaty. The talks to end 40 years of conflict have been running since October 2012 Tens of thousands of people have been killed over the past four decades of separatist fighting. The government's chief negotiator, Miriam Coronhel Ferrer, said the agreement marked the effective end of the formal negotiations. "Some more finishing touches" would be necessary, she said, "but it also marks the beginning of the bigger challenge ahead, which is t

Fighting reported in S. Sudan despite cease-fire

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — In a sign a new peace deal may not hold, South Sudan's government and rebels accused each other of attacks Saturday that come after the cease-fire was supposed to take hold. If the attacks continue, government troops will defend themselves, said Information Minister Michel Makeur Lueth. The peace deal was signed Thursday night but did not go into effect for 24 hours, said Lueth. Rebel spokesman Lul Ruai Koang countered "It is government forces who are breaking the cease-fire, not us. ... they attacked our positions and immediately accused us of breaching the cease-fire. The minister would not say where the fighting was taking place on Saturday. Koang said they were attacked in Unity and Jonglei states "and we fought back in self-defense." Government leaders had expressed fear that fighters in Jonglei known as the White Army would not abide by the deal. "These are rebels and they are undisciplined people and not a regular force and have n

Amnesty plea over Mohammad Asghar blasphemy case

Attempts to alter the blasphemy laws the blasphemy laws in Pakistan have been strongly resisted Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of a man from the UK who is facing death under Pakistan's blasphemy laws. Mohammad Asghar, from Edinburgh, was convicted and sentenced after sending letters to officials claiming to be the Prophet Mohammed. Mr Asghar's lawyer has said he suffers from mental illness. He was treated for paranoid schizophrenia in Edinburgh before he returned to Pakistan in 2010. Amnesty's deputy Asia Pacific director Polly Truscott said: "Mohammad Asghar is now facing the gallows simply for writing a series of letters. He does not deserve punishment. No one should be charged on the basis of this sort of conduct. "The blasphemy laws undermine the rule of law, and people facing charges risk death and other harm in detention. "Pakistan must immediately release Mohammad Asghar and reform its blasphemy laws to ensure that this will

Bomb hits Cairo, Al Qaeda-linked group claims attacks

Cairo: A bomb exploded near a police academy in Cairo on Saturday, security sources said, a day after a wave of deadly blasts raised fears that an Islamist insurgency was gaining momentum. An Al Qaeda-inspired group, based in Egypt's lawless Sinai Peninsula, claimed responsibility for Friday's attacks which killed six people, said the SITE monitoring organisation. No one was wounded in Saturday's explosion, said the interior ministry, but more violence was expected as rival political movements gather to mark the third anniversary of the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Islamist militants based in the Sinai Peninsula have stepped up attacks since the army toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in July. Hundreds of security forces have been killed. Militant group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (Supporters of Jerusalem) claimed responsibility for the attacks, including a car bomb at a security compound in central Cairo, in a message posted online, said U

Agent: Osceola neo-Nazi biker gang talked about targeting Obama officials, Orange County Sheriff

By Henry Pierson Curtis, Orlando Sentinel KISSIMMEE — Brian Klose and his fellow members of the 1st SS Kavallerie Brigade Motorcycle Division organization thought their club was a creation of the Aryan Nations hate group. They were wrong. A member of the Orange County Sheriff's Office intelligence squad duped Aryan Nations' leader August Kreis III into founding what he believed would be the militant arm of white supremacists across the country, according to court records. This week, the story of the 1st SS Kavallerie Brigade was told for the first time in detail at the Osceola County Courthouse, where one of several agents with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force described living undercover for months as a renegade bomb maker and probationary member of both the Outlaws and the neo-Nazi biker gang. Deputy Kelly Boaz, the undercover agent, testified Wednesday that the domestic terrorism case began in 2008-09 in part because bikers at the St. Cloud clubhouse had been talking about

Munich protesters slapped with €200 fine for blocking neo-Nazi march

A demonstrator holds a placard which reads "never again fascism" during a left-wing demonstration in Berlin.(Reuters / Fabrizio Bensch) Munich authorities have dished out fines of 200 euro each to 20 demonstrators who peacefully blocked a neo-Nazi march two years ago. Those fined have accused the powers that be of going above and beyond the call of duty to track them down. In January 2012, anti-fascist protesters confronted a group of neo-Nazis outside a historic gate in Munich’s historic center, stopping the far-right demonstration in its tracks. No violence was reported, but two years on, 20 of the anti-fascist demonstrators have been slapped with the steep fines. "Of course I won't pay the fine," Siegfried Benker, former Green Party leader on the Munich City Council who took part in the action, told the Local’s German edition. Benker, who accused the relevant authorities of being excessively “meticulous” in tracking down the anti-fascist activists, said the a

12 dead as violence hits China's Xinjiang: Authorities

BEIJING: Six people died in explosions and another six were shot dead by police in China's Xinjiang, authorities said on Saturday, in the latest wave of violence to hit the restive region. The violence in Xinhe in Aksu prefecture in China's far west appears to be linked to triple explosions that rocked the same area on Friday evening, which authorities said resulted in three deaths. It is unclear if the three deaths reported Friday are included in the latest tally of 12 fatalities. "As police were dealing with violent incidents a mob threw explosives," with six people killed by police, five arrested and another six killed as they "committed the offence", the Tianshan news portal, which is run by the local government, said Saturday. Xinhe is an area located at China's extreme west, on its border with Kyrgyzstan and populated predominantly by members of the country's Uighur minority. Tianshan reported late Friday that triple explosions killed three peo

Pakistan: Four Media Workers Dead in First Three Weeks of 2014

Pakistan appears to be living up to its designation by Reporters Without Borders and other rights groups as one of the deadliest countries in which to practice journalism.  So far, 2014 has witnessed the deaths of four media workers. Last week, three Taliban gunmen on motorcycles shot and killed three employees of Pakistan’s Express News TV . Earlier in the month, unidentified gunmen opened fire on Shan Odhor , a senior journalist with the Aaab Tak News Channel.  The Secretary General of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has condemned the incident and warned that these attacks won’t stop Pakistan’s journalists from speaking the truth.  He also announced a 10-day period of mourning for the slain media workers. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) this week wrote a letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, calling on him to take serious action to protect his country’s journalists and bring attackers to justice. “It is time that the Sharif government

Small Bomb Explodes in Rome Near French Church--2nd Update

ROME--A small bomb exploded near a French religious establishment in central Rome early Friday, damaging three cars and some windows in surrounding buildings, a spokesman for the Carabinieri military police said. Nobody was injured by the blast. The bomb went off around 0130 GMT in a street where the Church of Saint-Yves des Bretons, part of a French religious foundation, is located, about a five-minute walk from the historic Piazza Navona. "We aren't following any specific leads...nobody has claimed responsibility or given any warnings," the Carabinieri spokesman said. The incident occurred hours ahead of a meeting between French President François Hollande and Pope Francis. Separately, just over an hour before Mr. Hollande arrived to meet the pope, the Carabinieri received an anonymous call warning that there were two bombs in St. Peter's Square, said a Vatican spokesman. He said the police checked and it resulted in a hoax. President Hollande arrived

Maoists declare their presence in West Bengal

Two days before the Republic Day, Maoists announced their presence in a West Bengal district by issuing an "open letter" calling upon the people to join them in overthrowing the Indian state through an armed struggle. Maoist activities in the state had come to a halt after the death of Kishenji, a politburo member of the CPI (Maoist) who steered the West Bengal unit of the banned outfit. The two-page letter, circulated by Burdwan industrial belt committee of the CPI(Maoist), termed the independence "a sham" and urged the people to join the armed struggle for a "new democratic revolution in India". "The freedom of India only means the transformation of India from a semi-feudal colonial country to a semi-feudal semi-colonial country," said the letter, a copy which is in possession of HT. This is the first time since Kishenji's death in Burishole forest in West Midnapore district on November 24, 2011 that any new committee of the CPI (Maoist

Kyrgyzstan troops in deadly gunfight near China border

24 January 2014 Kyrgyzstan officials say troops have killed 11 members of an unidentified criminal group near the Chinese border. The acting head of the border service told the BBC that the armed men had first killed the head of the hunting department in the area. Raimberdi Duishenbiev said the group also used explosives and torched some buildings in the north-eastern Issykul region. He said they were killed after refusing to give themselves up. Kyrgyzstan, in Central Asia, became independent in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. "According to our information a border guard in the Pikretik area called the military base and reported the sighting of 10-12 unknown people," Mr Duishenbiev said. "When the military reached the area it was established that there were 11 of them. The unknown group had knifed the head of the hunting department to death." Mr Duishenbiev said shooting broke out and two members of the group were killed. "The group hid in buil

Burma violence: UN calls for Rohingya deaths inquiry

The attacks were said to have taken place near the town of Maungdaw The UN human rights chief has called on Burma to investigate reports that dozens of Rohingya Muslims have been killed in attacks by Buddhists in Rakhine state. In a statement, Navi Pillay said a "full, prompt and impartial investigation" was needed. The UN had "credible information" that 48 Rohingya Muslims had been killed in violence in early January. The government, however, has rejected the claims as groundless. In a statement sent to the BBC, presidential spokesman Ye Htut said the UN was not listening to its own staff on ground and was damaging its reputation in Rakhine state. Rakhine state - in the west of Burma, which is also known as Myanmar - has seen several outbreaks of violence targeting the Rohingya Muslims since June 2012. 'Receive justice' In the statement, the UN said eight Rohingya Muslim men were attacked at Du Char Yar Tan village on 9 January. On 13 January, a police offi

Row over Nazi history consumes Hungary

23 January 2014 Jobbik party leader Gabor Vona at a party rally Hungary has been gripped by an intense public debate on the role of the country during World War Two. A government proposal for a monument commemorating the German occupation of March 1944, has prompted critics to accuse it of trying to rewrite history, and deflect attention from Hungary's role as an ally of Germany up until that point, and its role in the Holocaust. The proposal was announced just a day after an election was called for 6 April - leading some to accuse the governing conservative Fidesz party of stoking nationalism in order to see off the challenge from the far-right Jobbik party. Complicity After the proposed design for the monument - which shows an angel representing Hungary being attacked by an eagle representing the Third Reich - was unveiled last weekend, opposition figures and Jewish community leaders objected that it completely failed to acknowledge official Hungarian complicity in the wholesale

Gabor Vona: May urged to ban far-right leader from UK

24 January 2014 Gabor Vona's Jobbik party is said to have close links with neo-Nazi groups Calls are mounting for the Home Secretary Theresa May to ban Hungarian far-right Jobbik party leader Gabor Vona from entering the UK. Labour MP Frank Dobson and London Assembly Member Andrew Dismore urged the Home Office and Metropolitan Police to act to prevent potential unrest. Mr Vona plans to stage a political rally in central London on Sunday, the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day. He has denied claims he will meet other far-right parties including the BNP. Mr Vona's Jobbik party has been accused of holding strong anti-Semitic views, and of fuelling hatred against the Jewish and Roma communities. It is the most successful extreme right organisation in Europe, with three seats in the EU parliament and 44 in the Hungarian Parliament. It has been linked to far-right parties in the EU such as the BNP, the French Front National and Greece's Golden Dawn. Mr Vona, who founded the now-outlaw

Iraq fighting 'displaces 140,000' in Anbar, says UNHCR

The displaced include 13,000 families, according to the UNHCR The number of Iraqis fleeing fighting in western province of Anbar has risen to 140,000, the UN refugee agency UNHCR says, citing Iraqi government figures. In the past week alone, some 65,000 had fled, a UNHCR spokesman said - the largest displacement since the peak of sectarian violence in 2006-2008. Sunni militants linked to al-Qaeda have seized control of Falluja and parts of Ramadi, the two main cities in Anbar. This came after security forces cleared Sunni protest camps on 30 December. Sunni militants allied to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis), as well as armed tribesmen angry with the government, overran Falluja in early January after clashes triggered by a raid on protest camps there and in Ramadi, the provincial capital. Iraq's minority Sunni Arab community has long complained that it is being marginalised by Prime Minister Nouri Maliki's Shia-led government and unfairly targeted by the securit

Five Afghan volleyball players shot dead: officials

MIHTARLAM: Gunmen shot dead five young Afghan men playing volleyball, officials said Friday, but Taliban insurgents responsible for much of Afghanistan's unrest denied any involvement in the killings. Former warlord Ismail Khan, a vice-presidential candidate in the forthcoming April election, also escaped an apparent assassination attempt when a suicide bomber detonated himself outside a mosque after Friday prayers. The volleyball players were gunned down in the eastern province of Laghman by attackers riding on a motorbike. “Armed men opened fire on a volleyball game. The players were young men, all innocent, and all of them were killed,” Sarhadi Zwak, spokesman for Laghman's provincial governor, told AFP. The Taliban regime between 1996-2001 banned volleyball and many other activities, but a spokesman for the group said it was not responsible for Thursday's deaths. “We completely reject this allegation. We are not involved in this killing at all. Those who killed them are

Suicide bomber kills four in Cairo, two more blasts follow

CAIRO (Reuters) - A suicide car bomber blew himself up in the parking lot of a top security compound in central Cairo on Friday, killing at least four people in one of the most high-profile attacks on the state in months, security sources said. The early morning explosion damaged the Cairo Security Directorate, which includes police and state security, and sent smoke rising over the capital, raising concerns that an Islamist insurgency was gathering pace. Hours after the attack, two more blasts rocked the capital. A crude explosive device killed one policeman and wounded nine others in another Cairo neighborhood, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. Security sources said a person driving past security vehicles threw a hand grenade in their direction. In Giza, a large district on the outskirts of Cairo, a third explosion went off near a police station. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The dead from the first blast included three policemen, security sources said. Stat
