Bomb attack on Kurdish village kills 20

The northern iraq still burns and the Khurds are a frightened lot.The kurdish - Arab battle continues.... IRISH TIMES MICHAEL JANSEN A KURDISH village in northern Iraq was devastated yesterday by a massive truck bomb that killed 20 people and wounded 35. Local police fired on a second truck, killing the driver before he could detonate his explosives. Wardek, a mudbrick village of 250 houses 55km southeast of Nineveh’s provincial capital of Mosul, was the latest target in a tit-for-tat battle for territory between Kurds and Arabs. The Kurds seek to annex their autonomous region portions of Nineveh and Dyala governorates, as well as the whole of oil-rich Tamim province. But Arab Iraqis and the Turkoman minority oppose the expansion of the Kurdish region, and some have taken up arms against the Kurds who retaliate against Arab and Turkomen villages. This struggle is seen by Baghdad and Washington as a greater threat to Iraq’s stability than Sunni-Shia antagonism. The Wardek blast was th

Stephen Farrell's Release: Questions About British Raid

Image
By TIM MCGIRK / KABUL – Wed Sep 9, 6:20 pm ET A British commando raid on a Taliban hideout rescued kidnapped New York Times reporter Stephen Farrell on Sept. 9. But Farrell's Afghan translator Sultan Munadi and a woman and child were killed in the raid, raising questions about whether military force should have been used. Farrell and Munadi were captured by Taliban gunmen on Sept. 5 while reporting on the aftermath of a NATO air strike on two hijacked fuel tankers. The strike killed more than 90 Afghans and stoked outrage about the frequent deaths of Afghan civilians in coalition air attacks. Soon after the pair were grabbed, their newspaper opened up channels to Taliban commanders in Kunduz, the province in northern Afghanistan where the hostage-taking occurred. Officials from the International Committee for the Red Cross were in direct contact with the captors, according to a source familiar with the negotiations, as were sympathetic local Afghans and tribal elders with ties t

Yahoo news By KIM GAMEL, Associated Press Writer  –  46 mins ago BAGHDAD – Suicide attackers struck near a Shiite mosque north of Baghdad and a checkpoint west of the capital on Monday as bombings killed at least 17 people nationwide. The violence was concentrated in former Sunni insurgent strongholds that have seen a sharp decline in violence after local tribal leaders turned against  al-Qaida  in  Iraq . Despite the relative calm, a series of deadly bombings have raised concerns about a resurgence of violence as the U.S. military scales back its presence, with a full withdrawal planned by the end of 2011. The attacks — which mainly targeted checkpoints and Iraqi policemen — also highlighted the weaknesses in the  Iraqi security forces , which are struggling to prove they are ready to take over from the Americans.
