Trial took 26/11 plot to doorstep of Pak govt: US paper

CHICAGO: Describing Tahawwur Rana's trial as "one of the most significant" terror cases in the US, the American media on Friday widely covered his conviction on charges that he aided the Lashkar-e-Taiba ( LeT ) and plotted a strike in Denmark, while noting that he was acquitted of involvement in "India's 9/11". It said that the 50-year-old Pakistani-Canadian was acquitted in the "most serious charge" that he aided co-accused David Headley in the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks. "Rana's trial included far-reaching testimony by Headley about the plotters' links to the Inter-Services Directorate, the Pakistani government's intelligence office, known as the ISI ," The Chicago Tribune said in a front-page report, calling the trial "one of the most significant terror cases ever tried" here. It noted that Headley has testified that one of his co-conspirators was a member of the ISI, bringing the Mumbai terror

Deal with Headley worth it: US attorney

CHICAGO: Justifying a controversial plea bargain deal cut with the Mumbai attacks accused David Headley that spared him the death penalty and extradition to India , a top US attorney said that not making the pact would have been a 'terrible mistake'. "We would have made a terrible mistake if we did not sit down with Headley and get all the information that we did," US attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said after a Chicago court convicted Tahawwur Rana on two terrorism charges based in part on Headley's cooperation with prosecutors. "Headley had an insider's view of what (Illyas) Kashmiri was up to, what they discussed and what he was planning. He also had the insider's view of what Sajid Mir and Major Iqbal were up to and what people were doing," Fitzgerald said, adding that Headley has so far named 34 targets that had been surveyed. Asked how valuable was the information provided by Headley, Fitzgerald said that it was well wort

CIA chief confronts Pak over collusion with terrorists See photo CHICAGO: The Chicago trial of Tahawwur Rana shows how a growing number of serving and former Pakistani military and intelligence officers have put their lethal talents at the service of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), al-Qaida and other militant groups, a US media report has said. "Headley testified that the Mumbai plot was a joint operation in which he was directed by Major Iqbal of the ISI and LeT handler named Mir. The defence established that Rana communicated with Major Iqbal, but not any Lashkar masterminds," wrote investigative journalist, Sebastian Rotella, on ProPublica.Com. The Chicago court acquitted Rana on charges of plotting the 2008 Mumbai attacks but held him guilty of supporting Pakistan-based terror group LeT and planning a strike in Denmark that will get him a maximum of 30 years in jail. "The verdict suggested a common-sense analysis by the jur
