Australia was one of several nations which in August 2021 pulled troops out of Afghanistan, after being part of a NATO-led international force that trained Afghan security forces and fought the Taliban for two decades after Western-backed forces ousted the Islamist militants from power. The Taliban, since regaining power in Afghanistan, has been criticised for deeply restricting the rights and freedoms of women and gi...

He said a true ceasefire “cannot be completed unless there is a full withdrawal” of Israeli forces, alongside restored stability and freedom of movement for Palestinians, none of which have materialised. Turkiye’s top diplomat Hakan Fidan echoed that message at the forum, saying that without timely United States intervention, the peace process risks stalling entirely. Single women risk rape and exploitation in search for better life in Europe

Image
Esther was sleeping on the streets of Lagos when a woman approached her with the promise of a route out of Nigeria to a job and a home in Europe. She had dreamt of a new life, especially in the UK. Thrown out of a violent and abusive foster home, she had little to stay for. But when she left Lagos in 2016, crossing the desert to Libya, she had little idea of her traumatic journey ahead, forced into sex work and years of asylum claims in country after country. The majority of irregular migrants and asylum seekers are men - 70% according to the European Agency for Asylum - but the number of women like Esther, who have come to Europe to seek asylum is on the rise. "We are seeing an increase in women travelling alone, both on the Mediterranean and the Balkan routes," says Irini Contogiannis from the International Rescue Committee in Italy. Its 2024 report highlighted a 250% annual rise in the number of single adult women arriving in Italy on the Balkan route, while families grew ...

Australia Weighs Sending Old Tiger Helicopters to Ukraine

Canberra is assessing whether to send its fleet of 22 aging Eurocopter Tiger attack helicopters to Ukraine as Kyiv seeks more tools to counter Russian unmanned aerial systems and bolster frontline aviation,   according   to local Australian media. The review follows a formal request from Ukraine and renewed pressure from Australia’s Ukrainian community, which was angered last year when the Australian Defence Force dismantled and buried its grounded MRH-90 Taipan helicopters instead of donating them. Australian Defence Industry Minister  Pat Conroy  confirmed that officials had approached Kyiv about the Tigers, saying gifting them is “our top consideration,”  The Sydney Herald  reported . Canberra’s Tigers, inducted in 2004 and slated for withdrawal by 2028, have struggled with high sustainment costs, software and parts shortages, and a history of availability problems. Despite the fleet’s condition, sources said the helicopters could strengthen Ukrai...

Daryo” presents the stories of individuals who witnessed and endured the atrocities of the Tajik civil war (1992–1997), a conflict that claimed thousands of lives.
