‘No Non-Muslims In Bangladesh Parliament’: Jamaat Candidate's Speech Raises Alarm Over Radical Push

Sources said that this speech is nothing but a deliberate attempt to radicalise people and push them towards extremist ideology.   Ahead of Bangladesh parliamentary elections, a candidate from Jamaat-e-Islami triggered a row after he called for excluding religious minorities, including Hindus, from Parliament and advocated governance strictly based on the Quran. While addressing a rally, Afzal Hossain, Jamaat candidate from Barguna-2 constituency, said that in a country where nearly 80 per cent of the population is Muslim, there should be no non-believer or “immoral" representative in Parliament. Risk of ISIS detainee breakouts in Syria ‘of paramount concern’ for EU

Two former employees at the al-Hol desert camp said on Friday that some of its residents had escaped during an hours-long security vacuum. Brussels The EU said on Friday that alleged breakouts by detained foreign fighters from the Islamic State (ISIS) group in Syria were of “paramount concern,” and it was monitoring the transfer of prisoners to Iraq. “The recent alleged breakouts of Daesh (ISIS) detainees amidst the clashes is of paramount concern,” EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni said, referring to fighting between the Syrian government and Kurdish-led forces who had previously secured the prisoners. “We closely monitor the situation, including the transfer of remaining fighters detained, including foreign terrorist fighters to Iraq,” Anouni said. The EU expression of concern comes as poor security at a camp in Syria housing thousands of suspected relatives of ISIS extremists has prevented UN agency staff from entering, days after Kurdish forces withdrew and the army deployed at the sit...

Militarising the Sahel will not defeat terrorism

US air strikes, rival military blocs and competing foreign backers are reshaping security in West Africa and pushing states closer to conflict. After launching what he called “a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS [ISIL] terrorist scum” in northwest Nigeria on December 25, United States President Donald Trump promised “many more”, reaffirming his stance that the US “will not allow radical Islamic terrorism to prosper”. The strikes occurred less than a week after the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States (AES) commissioned a joint military force comprising a 5,000-strong contingent, presented as a symbol of collective self-reliance and security autonomy, in a concerted effort to combat terrorist groups in its member states. They also followed moves by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to establish an ambitious plan announced in August 2025 to activate a 260,000-strong joint counterterrorism force, backed by a proposed $2.5bn annual budget for logistics and...
