Sweden takes measures against PKK-related social media posts in Stockholm

ISTANBUL  Sweden has taken steps for posts on social media that picture the YPG/PKK terror organization’s so-called flag and its convicted ringleader, Abdullah Ocalan, that were projected onto buildings in Stockholm, according to the Foreign Ministry.  “Messages and images that we have reason to believe are manipulated have been circulating on social media, asserting that Sweden supports PKK. Relevant measures have been taken,” the ministry said in a statement. “This is a deliberate and malicious influence campaign with the clear aim of obstructing Sweden’s accession to NATO,” it said. Sweden has denounced the PKK terror group and condemns terrorism in all its forms, it noted. YPG/PKK-linked social media accounts shared images showing the organization's so-called flag and its leader’s picture projected onto the historic City Hall in Stock

Why France is betting on deep tech instead of the metaverse

It feels like the opposite of Mark Zuckerberg’s  metaverse . Instead of cute avatars in a virtual world of fun and discovery, deep tech gives off the impression of being more serious, complex and elusive for the average Facebook user. At  VivaTech , the conference for technological innovation and startups taking place in Paris until June 18, the metaverse is on everybody’s lips. But a stroll through the aisles reveals startups with more obscure names like Genoskin, Natif and Preligens – all from the world of deep tech. "This year, you can even filter this type of startup on the VivaTech website. This was unthinkable just a few years ago!" exclaims Alizée Blanchin, Director of Strategy for Hello Tomorrow, a global network of deep tech startups. Indeed, the lack of visibility of this branch of  technology  is due in part to the vagueness surrounding the term. Deep tech, or deep technology, refers to innovations resulting from scientific research that find their way into commerc

The  World Socialist Web Site  condemns these attacks and demands the release of all journalists. Faced with ever-increasing inflation and poverty, as well as a growing opposition and strike movement within the working class, the Erdoğan government is trying to use militarism and chauvinism to suppress the class struggle and target basic democratic rights. Manipur has a ‘hill of poppies’ problem. But CM’s war on drugs must tackle land issues first

Image
Manipur is coming down tough on poppy cultivators, but it’s easier to cut down the crop than make arrests – because whose hill is it anyway? Poppy fields in Manipur discovered in 2020 by the police teams for destruction | Source: Geetchandra Mangang A fter a five-hour hike, a 50-strong team of men reached the top of Koubru mountain in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district and surveyed the astounding view. Light green plants with colourful purple and white flowers carpeted the slopes as far as the eye could see. It was all poppy. Armed with small sticks, the men destroyed as many of the delicate plants as they could. But then the drones failed. “Clearly, our efforts weren’t enough. The drones ran out of battery power before they could capture all the slopes covered with poppy plants,” says Geetchandra Mangang, general secretary of the non-profit Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA), who was part of the team. That was in 2017, the first time the Manipur government trained its gaze on the

PKK images on buildings show how loose Sweden is on anti-terror fight: FM

ANKARA Members of the  PKK  have projected images of the terrorist organization’s flag and its leader, Abdullah Öcalan, on the elevations of main public buildings in  Sweden ’s capital Stockholm late on June 16. In short time, many social media accounts linked to the PKK and its affiliate in Syria, YPG, started airing the images projected on the municipality  building , historic City Hall and the Globen Avicii Arena Sports Hall online. PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the EU. After decades of military non-alignment, Russia’s war in Ukraine pushed Finland and Sweden to apply to join NATO in May. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, however, accuses the Nordic nations of supporting the PKK terrorists and has vetoed their entry into the alliance until they change their policies. The June 16 incident is the latest act in a series of events performed by the PKK members in Sweden since Erdoğan announced the veto. Some PKK members marched in the streets in Stockhol

Philippines designates suspected Abu Sayyaf militants, communists as terrorists

Image
The Philippine government has officially branded five suspected Muslim militants and six suspected members of the outlawed communist party as “terrorists,” saying the move will allow authorities to freeze financial assets that could be used for funding attacks.   Among official resolutions made public on Wednesday and Thursday, the government’s Anti-Terrorism Council said it had added the names of five Abu Sayyaf Group militants to its list of designated terrorists. All five are ASG sub-leaders with links to Daulah Islamiyah, the name for the Philippine branch of the Islamic State extremist group, officials alleged.  Both of these militant groups are concentrated in the southern Philippines, where their fighters have been blamed for terrorist acts. These have included suicide bombings, beheadings of hostages, and a five-month siege of the city of Marawi in 2017.   The council also designated six suspected members of the Communist Party of the Philippines as terrorists, including Luis J
