ISIS Targeting Malaysian Military Personnel For Recruitment: Top General

Image
Kuala Lumpur:  ISIS is targeting Malaysian military and police personnel to recruit them as they have the expertise in combat and in handling weapons, a top official of the country's armed forces said today. Malaysia's Armed Forces Religious Corps (Kagat) deputy director-general Brig-Gen Nawawi Daud said military and police personnel were targeted by ISIS because they were already trained for combat and had knowledge and skills in handling weapons.   "These two uniformed groups also have access to weapons and even bombs so IS targets them," he said at a forum about ISIS and its threat in Malaysia . Brig Gen Nawawi said, however, constant efforts were being made to make sure that members of the armed forces are not attracted to IS. "We hold regular briefings and seminars to educate our members about this and I know the police also do the same. Perhaps in the future the armed forces and police can jointly come up with a more integrated programme to educate ou

61 Dead In Kabul Explosion, ISIS Claims Responsibility

Kabul:  Suicide bombers hit a large demonstration by members of Afghanistan's Hazara minority in Kabul on Saturday, killing at least 61 people and wounding 207, officials said. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, Amaq news agency said. Graphic television footage from the site of the blasts showed many dead bodies lying on the bloodied road, close to where thousands of Hazara had been demonstrating over the route of a planned multimillion dollar power line. Mohammad Ismail Kawousi, a spokesman for the ministry of public health, said at least 61 dead and 207 wounded had been taken to nearby hospitals but the numbers may change. It was not immediately clear how many bombs were involved in the attack. Emergency vehicles were at the site and wounded were being carried away.   Much of the city centre had been sealed off with stacks of shipping containers and other obstacles as the march began earlier on Saturday, and security was tight with helicopters patrolling overhead. British police report over 6,000 hate crimes in month since Brexit vote

Britain's National Police Chiefs Council has reported more than 6,000 hate crime incidents across the United Kingdom since the EU referendum in late June. Most of the cases have involved violence. The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) said it had recorded 6,193 incidents of hate crime from mid-June to mid-July, figures obtained from police forces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The most commonly reported crimes were harassment, assault and other violence such as verbal abuse or spitting. The second and third most prevalent incidents were public order offences, followed by criminal damage. Since the EU referendum result was declared on June 24, Muslims and Eastern Europeans have said they have been particularly targeted. "Clearly any hate crime is unacceptable and these numbers are still far too high," said Mark Hamilton, the NPCC's assistant chief constable, in a statement issued Friday. Hamilton noted the figure for the second half of the

EU concerned about Turkey's path to dictatorship

A state of emergency has been declared in Turkey and now parts of the European convention on human rights are suspended. Most EU states don't want conflict with Ankara but are concerned about its path to dictatorship. Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz this week  summoned the Turkish ambassador  to his office in order to get his view of developments in Turkey. Kurz said his government had information that showed recent pro-Erdogan protests in Vienna had their origins in Turkey. In an interview with the German magazine "Spiegel", he said that Europe could not afford to appear weak by clinging to the refugee deal with Turkey "at all costs." Should the deal fall apart, he added, the EU would have to protect its borders on its own. Belgium, too, has summoned the Turkish ambassador after he accused a Flemish parliamentarian of being involved in last week's failed coup. Accession talks on ice? At the start of the week, EU High Representative for Foreign Affa
