US to stop refuelling Saudi aircraft fighting in Yemen amid global outrage over Khashoggi murder

The United States is halting refueling of aircraft from the Saudi-led coalition engaged in Yemen, the US and Saudi Arabia said on Friday, ending one of the most divisive aspects of US assistance to the Saudi war effort. Saudi Arabia, in a statement released by its embassy in Washington, said it had decided to request an end to US aerial refueling for its operations in Yemen because it could now handle it by itself. US defense secretary Jim Mattis backed the decision and said the US government was consulted. The move comes at a time of international outrage over the murder of US-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and after Democratic and Republican lawmakers threatened to take action in Congress next week over the refueling operations. Critics of the Saudi campaign — including Democrats who won control of the House of Representatives in elections on Tuesday — have long questioned US involvement in the war, which has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced more than 2 mi

Swiss Cyber Authorities Identify Crypto Trojans: Dridex, Gozi, Monerominer

Switzerland’s financial institutions continue to be   exploited by cybercriminals, says   the latest research report by cybercrime authorities. The only except in 2018 is that the targets are no longer banks but crypto exchanges. The research identified   Monerominer   virus, as the sixth most significant malware thanks to the anonymous nature of the virtual asset. MELANI Research The organization   Reporting and Analysis Centre for Information Assurance   (MELANI)   has shared the details of the recent   cyber threats   assailing Swiss internet space in recent times.   Most important findings of the research outfit have been the   Trojan Dridex which in its characteristic is an e-banking threat but has been re-worked to exploit the latent insecurities of cryptocurrency operations.  The virus had made its first appearance in 2012 as Cridex. The latest study reports that the configuration files of the virus had notably increased the number of crypto exchanges it had targ

Security Bloggers Network » Why no cyber 9/11 for 15 years? Why no cyber 9/11 for 15 years?

This   The Atlantic  article asks why   hasn’t there been a cyber-terrorist attack   for the last 15 years, or as it phrases it: National-security experts have been warning of terrorist cyberattacks for 15 years. Why hasn’t one happened yet? As a pen-tester who has broken into power grids and found 0dayss in control center systems, I thought I’d write up some comments. Instead of asking why one hasn’t happened yet, maybe we should instead ask why national-security experts keep warning about them. One possible answer is that national-security experts are ignorant. I get the sense that “national” security experts have very little expertise in “cyber” security. That’s why I include a brief resume at the top of this article, I’ve actually broken into a power grid and found 0days in critical power grid products (specifically, the ABB implementation of ICCP on AIX — it’s rather an obvious buffer-overflow, *cough* ASN.1 *cough*, I don’t know if they ever fixed it). Another possi

If Terrorists Launch a Major Cyberattack, We Won’t See It Coming

National-security experts have been warning of terrorist cyberattacks for 15 years. Why hasn’t one happened yet? Kathy Gilsinan   is a senior editor at   The Atlantic , where she oversees the Global section. Nov 1, 2018 National-security experts fear major terrorist cyberattacks, but their predictions have not yet come to fruition. Busà Photography / Getty “The FBI assesses the cyberterrorism threat to the U.S. to be rapidly expanding,” said one law-enforcement official, testifying before Congress. “Terrorist groups will either develop or hire hackers, particularly for the purpose of complementing large physical attacks with cyber attacks.” That assessment was made nearly   15 years ago . In the meantime, a generation of tech-savvy jihadists has exploited the internet to attract recruits, share bomb-making expertise, and incite violence. Yet they haven’t managed to pull off the devastating cyberattacks that experts have long feared. With just days left before America

IDF reorganizes to combat cyber terrorism

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot said Wednesday that IDF's cyber-security system, the most advanced field of the past decade, went through a complete reorganization process to combat cyber terrorism—the new threat facing Israel. Follow Ynetnews on   Facebook   and   Twitter       Speaking at a book launch for "Regulation in cyberspace" at the Academic Center for Law and Science, Eizenkot talked about the security challenges the military faces in light of growing cyber threats and the army’s plans to combat it.   IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot   (Photo: Amit Hoover) "We completed a whole reorganization process within the army to improve inter-organizational cooperation with the state. We conducted quite a few exercises and drills both within the IDF, as well as in cooperation with other organizations, understanding very well that this is a challenge that requires sharing our information, especially with friendly military forces,"

Facebook and Islamic State: How tech giants are struggling to win war on cyber terror

Image
When Mark Zuckerberg built Facebook in his Harvard dorm room he could never have anticipated jihadists using his creation to connect with dangerous friends and share videos of beheadings and other violent content. Yet Facebook remains an important weapon of choice for pro-Islamic State supporters, who continue to proliferate terrorist content across the world's largest social platform to recruit and incite attacks. A recent report from Counter-Extremism Project (CEP), a New York based think-tank, was critical of Facebook's failure to take down pro-Islamic State posts and propaganda which it claimed can "remain on the platform for months or even years". CEP found evidence on Facebook of pro-Islamic State recruiters using the platform's messaging system to connect with others, and post disturbing acts of graphic violence. Islamic State is also using the Facebook Live function to broadcast live information to supporters, CEP claimed. One video, which had be
