2 killed in gunfire exchange between troops, rebels in E. Indonesia

JAKARTA, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed in a fresh gunfire exchange between Indonesian troops and an insurgent group in Indonesia's easternmost mineral-rich province of Papua on Friday, a senior army officer said.
The Indonesian troop, Private First Class Sugiarto was killed after his group was being ambushed by an insurgent group member when they were about to backup their troops colleagues who were involved in a gunfire exchange with the insurgent group in Pintu Angin, Puncak Jaya regency in the province reported earlier in the morning.
"The ambush on the backup team occurred at 10:10 a.m. local time, conducted by an insurgent group led by Yambi," Head of Indonesian Armed Forces Information Service (Kadispenad) Brig. Gen. Andika Perkasa said in a statement.
Sugiarto was among 25 troops sent to backup the team involved in shootout against a radical insurgent group in gunfire location occurred on 7:15 a.m. in the morning. An insurgent group member was killed by Indonesian troops in the gunfire. Indonesian troops collected a rifle gun from the killed insurgent.
The shootout took place when a patrolling group of Indonesian troops from Joint Battalion 751 Raiders unit encountered with the insurgent group in the areas suspected as stronghold of the insurgent group.
Andika said that body of the killed soldier was now taken to the Mulia regional hospital before being flied to his hometown for burial. Joint operation by Indonesian troops and police has been conducted to pursue the remaining members of the radical group, he added.
The mineral-rich Papua province saw frequent arm conflicts between insurgent groups and the troops, which took lives of both sides. Insurgency in Papua was aimed to establish an independent state in the province.
