Bomb Blast Near Cairo Police Academy

A bomb has exploded near a police academy in the Egyptian capital Cairo on the third anniversary of the uprising in the country.

General Hani Abdel-Latif said the blast in the busy eastern district of Ein Shams damaged the walls of the training institute.

Eyewitnesses said the explosion shook nearby buildings and caused a brief power cut.

It comes a day after a wave of bomb attacks targeting police officers killed six people and coincides with the third anniversary of the uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak.

The aftermath of the attack in Cairo's Ein Shams district
Islamist militants have stepped up attacks since the army ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in July last year. Hundreds of security forces have been killed.

More violence is expected today when supporters of Mr Morsi as well as military loyalists take part in rival rallies.

An al Qaeda-inspired group has claimed responsibility for the bomb attacks on Friday.

In a statement, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, or Supporters of Jerusalem, urged Muslims to stay away from police stations and military sites.
