Terrorism deaths down globally, but up in Africa: UN chief

Image
The Secretary-General said an integrated and holistic approach is essential to the United Nations’ counter-terrorism strategy. The number of deaths from terrorist attacks is down globally but increasing in  Africa , UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. "Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 48 per cent of deaths attributed to terrorist groups globally last year," he told a meeting of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact on Wednesday. Terrorist groups like  al-Qaida , the Islamic State and their affiliates are continuing to grow in the Sahel and make inroads into central and southern Africa, he added. Terrorist groups exploit power vacuums, longstanding inter-ethnic strife, internal weaknesses and state fragilities, Guterres said. In conflict-affected countries like Congo, Libya and Somalia, terrorism intensified cycles of violence, fueling further instability, undermining peace efforts, and setting back development goals, Xinhua news agency reported. Inside Qatar’s ‘holy’ world of waging global Jihad and state-sponsored terrorism: A detailed report

In a report published by Usanas Foundation, an India-based geopolitics and security think-tank, it was revealed that Qatar-based Sheikh Eid Bin Mohammad Al Thani Charitable Association, also referred to as 'Eid Charity', has been funding millions of dollars to organisations associated with the extremist Islamic school of thought, Wahhabism since 2008. Qatar's interactions and dealings with Terror organizations are out in open Qatar, an Islamic peninsular monarchy has rested its strategic sovereignty on Islamism as its state policy. In the Arab world though, it has been lately accused of sponsoring and shielding terror organisations and their financiers on its soil. Turkish forces 'neutralize' 5 PKK terrorists in northern Iraq

ISTANBUL  Turkish security forces “neutralized” five PKK terrorists in northern Iraq, near the Turkish border, the National Defense Ministry said on Friday. The terrorists were targeted in the Operation Claw-Lock zone, the ministry said on Twitter. Turkish authorities use the term “neutralize” to imply the terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured. Türkiye launched Operation Claw-Lock in April to target the PKK terror organization's hideouts in Iraq’s northern Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan regions, near the Turkish border. It was preceded by Operations Claw-Tiger and Claw-Eagle, which were launched in 2020 to root out terrorists hiding in northern Iraq and plotting cross-border attacks in Türkiye. In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.   Source:  Turkish forces 'neutra

'Scale' and 'Scope' of Forced Labor in Xinjiang Increasing, Report Says

Image
WASHINGTON —  A new report on Uyghur forced labor in China finds there may be an increase in Beijing's coercive labor campaign targeting the predominantly Muslim ethnic group in Xinjiang, expanding a widely condemned program that China has long denied. "Despite the decrease in concrete publicly available evidence, the new developments are increasing both the scale and the scope of coercive labor, expanding it to higher-skilled sectors,"  stated a report posted this week  on the Washington-based Jamestown Foundation's website. The report warned that "sectors requiring higher skills levels will in the future increasingly be at risk of coercive labor as well." For Uyghurs who were forced into work placements in the past, China's current five-year plan that started in 2021 now prevents Uyghurs from leaving their work through "unemployment and poverty prevention" policies and surveillance, according to the report. At least three people were killed and three others injured in a mass shooting in a manufacturing facility in Maryland, authorities said. The manufacturing facility where the incident took place is said to be a Columbia Machine factory in Northern Maryland. The shooter and a Maryland State Police trooper are among the injured. The governor said to the US media that he did not know the status of the shooter. "We are actively monitoring the mass shooting in #Smithsburg right now, and our office is in contact with officials on the ground. If you're local, please stay away from the area as law enforcement responds," Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) tweeted soon after the shooting. A 23-year-old man from West Virginia is identified as the suspect who also worked at Columbia Machine, which provides concrete product equipment to customers in over 100 countries. The motive of the shooting is yet to be determined. This comes after the horrific mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvald

US House passes gun control bill after recent mass shootings

Image
The push comes after a House committee heard wrenching testimony from recent shooting victims and family members, including from 11-year-old girl Miah Cerrill. Representative Image: Reuters The House passed a wide-ranging gun control bill Wednesday in response to recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, that would raise the age limit for purchasing a semi-automatic rifle and prohibit the sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 15 rounds. The legislation passed by a mostly party-line vote of 223-204. It has almost no chance of becoming law as the Senate pursues negotiations focused on improving mental health programs, bolstering school security and enhancing background checks. But the House bill does allow Democratic lawmakers a chance to frame for voters in November where they stand on policies that polls show are widely supported. "We can't save every life, but my God, shouldn't we try? America we hear you and today in the House we
