UN demands Hamas hand weapons to Palestinian Authority

The UN General Assembly has adopted a French and Saudi-backed resolution demanding that Hamas release all hostages while ending its rule in Gaza and handing over weapons to the Palestinian Authority.   The resolution endorsed by the Arab League and 17 member states calls for collective action to end the Gaza war and lays the groundwork for a sovereign Palestinian state.   The move comes ahead of the September 22 summit, where French President Emmanuel Macron plans to formally recognise Palestine, adding pressure on Israel to end the conflict.   Israel rejected a UN declaration that outlines steps towards a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.    The Israeli authorities have rejected the UN-endorsed two-state solution, saying that it is not acceptable to Israel. In his post on X, Israeli foreign ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein said the declaration demonstrated the General Assembly was a "political circus detached from reality."   Ma...

Myanmar air strike kills at least 19 high school students: Armed group

BANGKOK: A Myanmar ethnic minority armed group said Saturday that a junta air strike killed at least 19 students, including children, in western Rakhine state. The Arakan Army (AA) is engaged in a fierce fight with Myanmar's ruling military for control of Rakhine, where it has seized swaths of territory in the past year. The Rakhine conflict is one element of the bloody chaos that has engulfed Myanmar since the military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government in a 2021 coup, sparking a widespread armed uprising. The AA posted a statement on Telegram on Saturday saying the attack on two private high schools in Kyauktaw township happened just after midnight Friday, killing 19 students between the ages of 15 and 21 and wounding 22 more. "We feel as sad as the victims' families for the death of the innocent students," the statement said. Militarized Pipelines: How China’s Security Priorities Harm Local Communities

Image
To keep China’s pipelines safe, Myanmar’s regime has made local people unsafe. Stretching nearly 800 km from Kyaukphyu, in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State, to Yunnan Province in China via northern Shan State, the twin oil and gas pipelines are viewed by Beijing as strategic lifelines that reduce its dependence on the congested and vulnerable Malacca Strait. But in Myanmar, they have become corridors of militarization. Villagers living along the route face land confiscation, forced labor and intimidation as regime forces tighten control to protect Chinese interests. Strategic lifelines The oil and gas pipelines, which began operation in 2013 and 2017, traverse 22 townships across Rakhine State, Mandalay Region, Magwe Region and Shan State. Developed by the state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation, the project has drawn opposition from local communities and environmental groups since 2013.
