10 Whistleblowers Who Changed History

Image
While the term  whistleblower  may evoke the image of contemporary figures like Edward Snowden or Chelsea Manning, whistleblowing has been a crucial counterbalance to corporate and political rapacity since antiquity.  Whistleblowers —people who report a company or organization’s wrongdoings, regardless of whether they work there or not—are far more than mere tattletales or informants. They’ve been stalwart agents of accountability, exposing corruption and injustice while often risking their own safety, reputation, and livelihoods. Whether it be challenging the tyranny of fascistic regimes, exposing insatiable corporate greed, or safeguarding democratic ideals, whistleblowers have long since proved themselves to be an indispensable presence in our collective culture.  Benjamin Franklin  Benjamin Franklin. | Fine Art/GettyImages © Fine Art/GettyImages Amid growing tensions between the American colonies and British Parliament, American revolutionary Benjamin F...

Uyghurs detained in Thailand say they face deportation, persecution in China

A group of Uyghur men who were detained in Thailand over a decade ago say that the Thai government is preparing to deport them to China, alarming activists and family members who say the men are at risk of abuse and torture if they are sent back. In a letter obtained by The Associated Press, 43 Uyghur men held in Bangkok made a public appeal to halt what they called an imminent threat of deportation. "We could be imprisoned, and we might even lose our lives," the letter said. "We urgently appeal to all international organisations and countries concerned with human rights to intervene immediately to save us from this tragic fate before it is too late." The Uyghurs are a Turkic, majority Muslim ethnicity native to China's far west Xinjiang region. After decades of conflict with Beijing over discrimination and suppression of their cultural identity, the Chinese government launched a brutal crackdown on the Uyghurs that some Western governments deem a genocide. South Sudan rocked by heavy gunfire as Sudanese businesses looted

JUBA, South Sudan Heavy gunfire erupted and security forces were deployed in South Sudan’s capital Thursday to stop angry youths from looting businesses owned by Sudanese nationals. Reports indicated that Sudanese-owned businesses in neighborhoods across Juba had been vandalized and looted amid rising tensions. In response, police fired shots in the air to discourage youths from looting and destroying the shops. The unrest follows protests by local residents condemning the alleged killing of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Col. John Kassara Koang Nhial, spokesperson for the South Sudan National Police Service, confirmed to Anadolu that police were dispersing a group of South Sudanese who are protesting against the killing of South Sudanese in Wad Madani, El Gezira State’s capital, by the SAF. He said Sudanese people living in South Sudan will be protected at all costs and their properties and shops should not be looted. Early this week, gruesome vi...

PKK would leave Syria if Kurdish forces keep leadership role, official says

Jan 16 (Reuters) - An official with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) said on Thursday the militant group would agree to leave northeastern Syria if the U.S.-allied Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) maintains a significant joint leadership role there. "Any initiative resulting in the governance of northeastern Syria under the control of the SDF, or in which they have a significant role in joint leadership, will lead us to agree to leave the region," the official at the group's political office in northern Iraq said. The PKK is considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and Europe. It has fought a separatist insurgency against the Turkish state for 40 years and more than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict. After the ousting of president Bashar Al-Assad in Damascus last month, Ankara has threatened to crush the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, which is a part of the SDF that it says is an extension of the PKK.   Ankara has said the SDF must be dis...
