Florida Boarding School to Pay Nearly $2 Million to Settle Lawsuit Over Enrolling Students With Alleged Cartel Ties

Treasury officials said the school committed 89 sanctions violations tied to tuition payments A famous preparatory boarding school known for its elite sports programs agreed to pay almost $2 million to settle a potential liability lawsuit after allowing two students with alleged ties to a  Mexican cartel  to attend the institution. The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced that IMG Academy, based in Bradenton,  Florida , continued processing tuition payments for the two students, resulting in 89 violations of counternarcotics sanctions over a four-year period. According to OFAC, the transactions allowed sanctioned individuals to conduct business with U.S. persons and access the U.S. financial system. Russia's SVR foreign intelligence agency has taken over mercenary group Wagner's influence operations in Africa after the death of its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, according to a new investigation. Wagner, whose brutal methods have been denounced by rights organisations, was Russia's best-known mercenary group. It had a widespread presence in Africa, deploying fighters alongside the armies of countries including Libya and Mali, and also conducted vast disinformation and destabilisation campaigns. Nearly three years into Sudan’s war, violence is intensifying, famine conditions are looming in parts of the country, and civilians remain trapped between shifting front lines, senior UN political and humanitarian officials told the Security Council on Thursday, warning that the risk of further mass atrocities remains alarmingly high. “Just over a month ago, Sudan reached a horrific milestone: 1,000 days of a brutal war that has nearly destroyed the third largest country in Africa,” Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs  said .
