UK Defends Online Safety Law Amid X's Free Speech Criticisms

In the event of non-compliance, platforms are liable to fines of up to $24 million, or 10 per cent of their global turnover, whichever is higher.   The UK government on Saturday defended a new online safety law following harsh criticism from social network X, saying it was "demonstrably false" that it "compromises free speech". Under the law, which took effect on July 25, online platforms must take steps to prevent children from accessing harmful content such as pornography. But X said Friday that "the act's laudable intentions are at risk of being overshadowed by the breadth of its regulatory reach. "Without a more balanced, collaborative approach, free speech will suffer," added the platform, formerly known as Twitter, saying regulators had taken a "heavy-handed approach". "When lawmakers approved these measures, they made a conscientious decision to increase censorship in the name of 'online safety," added the platform, ...

Israeli Hostage Shown Gaza Starvation Footage, Palestinian Islamic Jihad Releases Video

In the video, Braslavski, 21, can be seen identifying himself and pleading with the Israeli government to secure his release. Israel Army Chief Warns Of Combat "Without Rest" In Gaza Unless Hostages Are Freed

Aid agencies have meanwhile warned that Gaza's population is facing a catastrophic famine, triggered by Israeli restrictions on aid. Israel's top general has warned that there will be no respite in fighting in Gaza if negotiations fail to quickly secure the release of hostages held in the Palestinian territory. "I estimate that in the coming days we will know whether we can reach an agreement for the release of our hostages," said army chief of staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, according to a military statement. "If not, the combat will continue without rest," he said, during remarks to officers inside Gaza on Friday. Footage released by the Israeli military showed Zamir meeting soldiers and officers in a command centre. Of the 251 people who were kidnapped from Israel during Hamas's attack in October 2023, 49 remain in Gaza, 27 of them dead, according to the military.  Palestinian armed groups this week released two videos of hostages looking emaci...

"Palestinian resistance won’t stop until Israeli Occupation ends", says Hamas

Hamas said Thursday that the Palestinian resistance will not stop until the end of the Israeli Occupation and the establishment of a fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. In a joint statement issued by Hamas and other Palestinian factions regarding the “New York Declaration,” the groups stated that the path to a solution begins with halting what they described as a fascist assault on the Palestinian people, ending the genocide, and stopping the systematic starvation imposed by the occupation forces. The factions affirmed their readiness to resolve the issue of captives held in Gaza as part of a ceasefire agreement that would include a full withdrawal of "Israeli" forces from the Gaza Strip, reopening of crossings, and the immediate start of reconstruction. They also emphasized the need for a serious political process, under international and Arab sponsorship, to end the occupation and achieve Palestinian aspirations for a fully sovereign state with ...

Nagaland extremist groups to form task force to check illegal immigration amid Assam eviction drive

A coalition of extremist groups in Christian-majority  Nagaland  has announced the formation of an Immigration Control Task Force to prevent “illegal immigrants” from entering the State. The move by the Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (WC-NNPGs) comes in response to the Assam government’s eviction drive targeting encroachers — mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims, often perceived as Bangladeshis — from forested areas along the inter-State boundary. At least six groups, rivals of the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, form the NNPGs. The coalition signed the Agreed Position, a peace agreement with the Centre, in 2017. Taking “serious note” of the “imminent threat posed to the demographic, socio-economic, and political future” of the Nagas, the WC-NNPGs, in a statement issued on Friday, said the task force has been envisaged to control and regulate issues relating to people of doubtful citizenship. The committee said it would not al...

Hinduphobic judiciary’s weird rulings; K’taka HC finds nothing wrong in Muslims preaching Islam in Mandir

Indian judiciary  is well known for its Hinduphobia (Hindudvesh) but just when one thinks the judiciary cannot plumb any lower, one or the other court comes up with an order that forces us to rethink. Many judgements are not just Hinduphobic but downright outrageous and  K’taka quashes FIR against Muslims preaching Islam in Mandir In July 2025, the Karnataka High Court (HC)  quashed  an FIR filed against three Muslim men who were accused of preaching Islam and distributing religious pamphlets near the Ramatheerth Mandir in Jamkhandi, Bagalkot district. The incident allegedly took place on 4 May 2025, around 4:30 pm. The men were accused of promoting Islamic teachings to temple visitors, making derogatory remarks against Hindu Dharma, and allegedly offering incentives such as vehicles and jobs in Dubai to encourage people to convert. The FIR charged them under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including provisions related to promoting enmity, hurt...

US Calls Off Sudan Peace Talks After Dispute Over Post-War Power

The US postponed a meeting of foreign ministers to discuss the war in Sudan because of a dispute over the wording of a proposed joint statement, according to people familiar with the matter.  (Bloomberg) -- The US postponed a meeting of foreign ministers to discuss the war in Sudan because of a dispute over the wording of a proposed joint statement, according to people familiar with the matter.  Secretary of State Marco Rubio was scheduled to host the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt in Washington on Wednesday. The discussions by the so-called Quad of countries were aimed at advancing peace talks between two Sudanese generals who’ve been at war since April 2023.  The failure to proceed with negotiations came after Egypt disagreed with the wording of a planned communique that stated neither the Sudanese Armed Forces nor the rival Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group should have a leading role in a post-war transitional government, sa...

Canada’s dangerous embrace of appeasement

Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, has made his diplomatic debut by announcing that his country plans to recognize a Palestinian state at the U.N. General Assembly this September. While he presents the move as a noble attempt to preserve the two-state solution, in practice, it does the opposite: It rewards terrorism, undermines Israel’s security and legitimizes a Palestinian leadership that has rejected peace time and again. The timing of this announcement is not just poor but downright appalling. Carney invokes the horrors of Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas-led terrorists burned, murdered, raped and kidnapped Israeli civilians in the worst atrocity against Jews since the Holocaust. And yet he frames his country’s decision as a reaction to Israel’s actions—not those of Hamas. Canada, he says, must act because of Israel’s growing presence in Judea and Samaria (aka, the West Bank), and the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Somehow, Hamas’s war crimes become Israel’s moral burde...

"Bring our classmate back from Iraq," reads the petition on the Change.org platform. As commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and one of the most senior leaders in the Kurds-led Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), Kurdish leader General Mazloum Abdi is a key player in a region with a complex and unique set of security and governance challenges. While interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa and the Damascus government have been asking the SDF to honour their March 10 deal by dissolving the outfit and fully integrating its fighters into the Syrian Arab Army, the SDF has been demanding a decentralised security arrangement that preserves its command structure. Besides decentralisation, the SDF had been seeking ethnic/religious rights (especially Kurdish recognition) and gender equality. Damascus, however, rejects these ...
