Kurds in Lebanon: Shengal massacre is stain on humanity's conscience
Kurds in Lebanon condemned the genocide committed by ISIS against the Yazidi people in 2014, affirming that “the Shengal massacre is a war crime and a stain on the conscience of all humanity.” They called on international powers to assume responsibility in prosecuting the perpetrators and ensuring such atrocities are never repeated.
BEIRUT
In a statement, the Kurds in Lebanon denounced the massacre committed by ISIS on August 3, 2014, against the Yazidi community, describing it as “one of the most brutal massacres in modern history and a fully-fledged act of genocide.”
The statement pointed out that “the ISIS attack on the Shengal district resulted in the killing of thousands of Yazidi men, who were buried in mass graves. Thousands of women and girls were abducted, subjected to the most horrific forms of physical and psychological violence, and sold in slave markets. Hundreds of children were also kidnapped and forcibly recruited, in blatant violation of all international conventions.”
It stressed that “around 2,900 Yazidis, mostly women and children, are still missing to this day,” and noted that “many of the abducted women were taken to Syrian areas such as Raqqa, and that the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) and Guerrilla fighters managed to rescue a large number of them over the past years.”
The statement criticized the Kurdistan Democratic Party for “abandoning the Yazidi people in moments of danger,” and held the Iraqi state and its army accountable for failing to protect civilians in Shengal.
On the other hand, the statement praised “the sacred role played by the freedom fighters of Kurdistan in defending the Yazidi community and preventing the massacre from expanding.”
It reiterated that “the Shengal massacre is a war crime and a stain on the conscience of all humanity.”
In conclusion, the Kurds in Lebanon called on “international powers, especially the UN Security Council and the United Nations, to assume their moral and humanitarian responsibilities in protecting religious and ethnic minorities from genocide and ethnic cleansing, and to work to prevent the recurrence of such massacres.”
