RSF attacks North Darfur town, forcing civilians to flee to Chad
October 15, 2025 (EL FASHER) – The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the town of Abu Gamra in North Darfur on Wednesday, burning dozens of homes and forcing residents to flee toward the Chadian border, a local community leader said.
The attack took place less than 24 hours after the defection of a force of about 20 combat vehicles. The unit, part of the Sudan Liberation Forces Gathering led by Tahir Hajar, broke from the RSF-dominated Tasis alliance to join the Joint Force allied with the army.
Ishag Mohamed Abakar, a community leader in North Darfur, told Sudan Tribune that a “large force” from the RSF, which had gathered from the areas of Kabkabiya and El Geneina, carried out the attack on the town in Karnoi locality.
The attack adds to recent instability in the region. In early October, Abu Gamra and other areas in Karnoi locality saw heavy fighting after a dispute between two clans of the Zaghawa ethnic group left several people dead, including community leaders.
For weeks, the RSF has deployed significant military reinforcements to the border between North and West Darfur. The build-up is concentrated near the localities of Al-Tina, Karnoi, and Umbaru, which remain under the control of the army and its allied armed movements.
