Malaysia not a Hamas base, says IGP after US analyst's remark
KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 24): The Royal Malaysian Police on Wednesday denied claims by former US Department of Treasury terrorism finance analyst Jonathan Schanzer that Malaysia was serving as a hub for Hamas operations.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the Palestinian struggle was an issue close to the hearts of Muslims in Malaysia, but the country continued to maintain good relations with the US and other nations.
“There are foreign nationals here, especially from Palestine, Syria and others, who are studying in our institutions of higher learning, and perhaps our people’s concern (for their plight) has been misinterpreted by certain quarters,” he told a press conference here on Wednesday
Schanzer, via his social media account, alleged that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was not interested in peace between Palestine and Israel.
Mohd Khalid said the Malaysian police constantly collaborate and share information with foreign counterparts to ensure security and effective preventive measures in the future.
On the country’s security control level, including at border areas, he said it remains at an optimum level, thanks to close cooperation among government agencies such as the Immigration Department, Customs Department and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency.
“We are in constant communication, sharing information and taking joint action to deal with issues related to border security,” he said.
