Israel carries out attacks on Hezbollah in southern Lebanon
Israel announced on Thursday that it had carried out new airstrikes against Hezbollah military targets in southern Lebanon to prevent the militant group from regrouping in that part of the country.
The United States brokered a ceasefire in November between Lebanon and Israel after more than a year of fighting sparked by the war in Gaza, but Israel has continued with sporadic attacks on Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran across the border.
Hezbollah has been declared a terrorist group by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted the Lebanese group's military wing, but not the political party.
The Israeli military confirmed in a statement that it was carrying out unspecified strikes, after earlier saying it would strike Hezbollah's military infrastructure "in response to the group's illegal efforts to restore activity in the area."
She warned residents of three villages to evacuate.
The Lebanese state news agency NNA confirmed the attacks in the area. There was no immediate reaction from Hezbollah, or information about damage or casualties.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the evacuation warning contradicts international peace efforts.
Lebanon's government is committed to stopping hostilities and engaged in meetings to ensure implementation of a UN resolution that ended fighting between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006, Salam said in a post on X.
Lebanon is under pressure from the US, Saudi Arabia and Hezbollah's internal rivals to disarm the group.
Hezbollah has said it would be a very wrong step to even talk about disarmament while Israel continues airstrikes on Lebanon and occupies large parts of the country in the south./REL
