The Egyptian army has killed one of the dreaded terrorists belonging to an Islamic State affiliated group in exchange of fire in restive North Sinai governorate, a senior military official said on Saturday.

Salim Soliman Al-Haram was killed in a fire exchange with military forces in Shiekh Zwayed when the army forces attacked his house, military spokesperson Brigadier General Mohamed Samir said.

Al-Haram belonged to Ansar Beit el-Maqdes militant group which changed its name to Sinai Province after pledging allegiance to dreaded Islamic State terror outfit. Egypt's North Sinai has witnessed many violent attacks by militants since the January 2011 revolution that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak.

The attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by military following massive protests against his rule.

Over 600 security personnel have been killed so far.The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished hide outs that belonged to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
