Salman Rushdie says fatwa novel The Satanic Verses ‘was worth dying for’

THE controversial novel The Satanic Verses would have been worth dying for, its author Salman Rushdie said yesterday. Rushdie, who was sentenced to death over the 1988 novel under a fatwa issued by Iran’s then supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini, dismissed suggestions he might have disowned the book. “That would have been cowardly, craven, disgusting and shameful,” he said during an appearance at the Melbourne Writers Festival.
