Terrorism: NIDO Urges Nigerians, Int’l Community To Support FG

Nigerians throughout the United States of America under the auspice of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Organization in the Americas (NIDOA) on Saturday urged Nigerians and the international community to rally round the federal government in its efforts to end terrorism in the country.

Speaking at a well-attended rally held at the front of the Nigerian House in New York, NIDO’s Board Director, Government Affairs Worldwide, Dr. Akin Awofolaju, said that it was time for every Nigerian and the foreign nations to begin to see the efforts that the federal government of Nigeria is making to ensure that terrorism came to an end in the country.

He pressed further that  the federal government needs all the supports it can garner at this point to enable it ensure the return of the over 270 female students that were kidnapped by the Boko Haram’s men three months ago.

Awofolaju hailed the United States government for placing a juicy bounty on the heads of leaders of the Boko Haram Sect, stressing that such gesture would be encouraged if the federal government orchestrates it.

Also speaking, Honorable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Matters, said that productive efforts would be made to ensure that the kidnapped girls were returned back to their families safely.

Dabiri continued that the intervention of the international community would go a long way in eradicating terrorism in Nigeria, saying that it was wrong for a set of people to believe that kidnapping was the only way they could get back at the government.

She pressed further that it was morally wrong for members of the Boko Haram Sect to prevent girls from having western education just as she thanked the Nigerians in the Diaspora Organization (NIDO) for their efforts to support the government’s efforts to fight terrorists and as well bring back the abducted students.

In his own speech, Nigeria’s Consul-General in New York, Honourable Habib Baba Habu, OON, said that the efforts that the federal government is making to ensure the freedom of the abducted girls could not be overruled.

Habu, a seasoned diplomat added that it was time for Nigerians to learn to appreciate their own government and stop unnecessary criticism, noting that the federal government would do everything possible to flush terrorists out of Nigeria.

While thanking the organizers for what he called a ‘productive rally’,  the ambassador urged them to continue to support the Jonathan-led administration to fight those that are planning to use terrorist attacks to tear the country apart to a standstill.

The chairman and General Secretary of NIDO, New Jersey Chapter, Ahlaji Abdulahi Dauda and Dr. Anthony Afolo respectively, urged the federal government to do all it could to make the girls regain their freedom.

Both Dauda and Afolo also urged the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration to further equip and encourage all the security agents that are in search of the missing girls in Sambisa forest.

Addressing the crowd,  President of the Zumunta, USA, the Commissioner for African Commission in the office of the Mayor in Newark, New Jersey State and the Managing Partner of SIMADEN CAPITAL, LLC,  Dr. Ibrahim Salau, Hon. Innocent Okemezie and Mr. Michael Adeniyi respectively, lauded the federal government for its immediate rescue response as well as its timely demand for interventions from the United States and some other foreign countries.

Saying that insecurity was not peculiar to Nigeria alone, the trio of Salau, Okemezie and Adeniyi said that every effort to bring back the girls should be made before the situation becomes too late to handle.

To the chairman of the Ijaw Community in the United States, Chief Stephen Benstowe, it was wrong for members of the Boko Haram Sect to kidnap the innocent female students just because they have any grudge against the ruling government.

He said that there was also an agitation in the Niger Delta but young students or innocent citizens were not kidnapped or killed, adding that men of the terrorist group went very far by depriving the Chibok students their rights to freedom.

Benstowe pressed further that the Nigerian government would continue ti get supports from them and the international community in order to ensure that the remaining female students that are still in the captivity of the terrorists regain their freedom.

In her speech, Mrs Taiwo Adeniji, another leader of the Nigerian Community in the United States, said that the terrorists should urgently release the kidnapped female students.

She said that they should remember that those girls that are being manhandled, raped and tortured are future mothers and leaders of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, a member of the United States Congress, Rep. Christopher H. Smith,  in a letter of support sent to NIDO, expressed his unified support for the thousand of Boko Haram victims in Nigeria, adding that he would ensure his continuing commitment to seeing that the US provides appropriate and effective help in the struggle against the plague of the terrorist group.

The Congressman pressed further that it was imperative that the US and the international community continued and redouble their efforts to help bring relief to Nigeria having met with a number of the victims of Boko Haram.
