Terrorism dents Malaysia in global peace rankings again (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 — Terrorist activity caused Malaysia to drop four places in an international index measuring peace in 162 countries, taking it to 33th spot from 29th last year and 20th in 2012.
According to the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2014 released by independent research house Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Malaysia was also among the 30 countries in which levels of peace deteriorated.
“The countries that saw their scores decline the most included Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines,” the report said, referring to Asia-Pacific countries.
“The last two of these countries saw a worsening of their terrorist activity and political instability,” it said about Malaysia and the Philippines
Malaysia was ranked sixth in the region, behind New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Singapore and Taiwan.
With an index score of 1.659, Malaysia was placed in the “high” peace group.
Iceland (1.189), Denmark (1.193) and Austria (1.2) were the top three most peaceful countries globally, while the worst three countries were Syria (3.65), Afghanistan (3.416) and South Sudan (3.397).
Terrorist activities were one of the causes for the decline of peace in the world this year compared to 2013, the report said.
The report said there were notable increase of terrorist activities in Malaysia and the Philippines, although it admitted that the bulk had been contributed by Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.
It also revealed that Malaysia spent a total of US$15.3 billion (RM49.2 billion) to contain violence in the country last year, amounting to 2.9 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP).

Though Malaysia practises moderate Islam and has not seen any notable terror attacks in recent memory, concern has risen in the multi-faith nation over perceived Islamisation.
The Southeast Asian country has also been home to several suspected key figures in militant Islamic groups, such as the al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah blamed for the deadly 2002 Bali bombings and other attacks.
In April, 11 locals were arrested on suspicion of terrorism under the cover of humanitarian work, including in strife-torn Syria.
Malaysia was also rocked by an armed incursion by militants from southern Philippines in Lahad Datu, Sabah last year which killed 10 members of Malaysian security forces.
There was also a series of kidnappings, abduction and robberies in Sabah’s waters, and the influx of foreigners entering the state, prompting Putrajaya to set up the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom
