Who is delaying unification of maoist parties ?

KATHMANDU: The unification process of the two Maoist political parties prompted by the joint statement issued by both parties seems to have been held up for the differences among their top leaders.

The leaders have started questioning whether senior leader Baburam Bhattarai was the major reason behind the delay in the unification process.
After being crushed by the major parties, the two Maoist parties have realised that divided they would fall.
The leaders of both parties have been claiming that unification is a must despite huge differences, but still there has been no visible progress on that front.
Former All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) Chairman Lekhnath Neupane said the only binding thread for leaders of two Maoist parties was the doctrine of necessity. The leaders must learn from the fallout of past splits in Nepali Congress and CPN-UML and the increased attempts to indict their cadres for their perceived role in war era cases.
There are several factors behind the delay in the unification process besides the ideological differences between them.
It appears that senior leaders of Unified CPN-Maoist Baburam Bhattarai and Narayan Kaji Shrestha aren’t too happy with the idea.
Former vice-chairman Bhattarai, who is also a former prime minister, has already said that unification of the two parties was not possible anytime soon.
Maoist leader Bhattarai has already started warning the party supremo Pushpa Kamal Dahal that the birth of a new party is inevitable if the party was not reformed.
On the other hand, Secretary of the CPN-Maoist, Dev Gurung, claimed that the latest statements coming from
Bhattarai that he would not even follow Marxism at a time when they were talking about backtracking from Hetauda convention to Palungtar has further widened their distance instead.
“We don’t think Bhattarai would remain with us if the two parties merge,” CPN-M Secretary Gurung maintained.
Another former vice-chairman, Shrestha, has been keeping mum over the unification issue.
A host of leaders, including former ANNISU-R chief Neupane, opined that CPN-Maoist has remained hesitant lately on unification process so as not to repeat the past mistake of ‘grabbing all the mess’ that ultimately outnumbered the revolutionary lot in the party.
The leaders were referring to the process of unification with Mani Thapa-led Revolutionary Communist Party and CPN-United of Pari Thapa besides Bhattarai whose political ideology is opposite to that of UCPN-M leaders Baidhya and Shrestha.
