France condemns attack on French consul staff in Libya

PARIS, July 5 (Xinhua) -- France strongly condemned the gun attack on a couple with the French honorary consul in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, reiterating Paris support to help local authorities restore stability and guarantee security, the foreign ministry said Friday.
"France condemns in the strongest terms the attack that targeted Jean Dufriche and expressed its sympathy and support to him and to his family," said the ministry in a statement.
"Libya faces major challenges after 42 years of dictatorship and eight months of conflict. Restoring security is the priority for the development of the country and the establishment of the rule of law," the ministry added.
Late on Thursday, gunmen opened fire at Dufriche who was on his way back to his residence with his wife in their car. Both survived the attack and left for Tunisia on Friday, according to Libyan officials.
Thursday's attack was the second accident towards the French envoy after the French embassy in the Libyan capital was hit in April by a car bomb that injured two guards and caused heavy damage to the building.
Attacks on Westerners become common in Benghazi since former Libya leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in October, 2011, prompting concernes over the security mainly in the Libyan second largest city where the U.S. ambassador and three others were killed during an attack on the American diplomatic mission last September.
