In 2012, Ukraine was the fourth among the countries of the Council of Europe in terms of the number of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights in which the country was found to have violated the European Convention on Human Rights.

The press service of the court announced this in a statement.

The European Court of Human Rights' report on its activities and statistics in 2012 was published by the court's President Dean Spielmann at the annual press conference on 24 January.

"The countries with the largest number of decisions in at least one violation of the Convention by the state was found were Russia (122 decisions), Turkey (117), Romania (70), Ukraine (69), Bulgaria (58), Poland (56), and Greece (52)," the statement said.

The court also notes that as of December 31, 2012, the majority of the cases it considered were against Russia (22.3%), Turkey (13.2%), Italy (11.1%), and Ukraine (8.2%).

The court has jurisdiction over 47 countries of the Council of Europe.

According to the report, the European Court of Human Rights examined 7,606 claims against Ukraine in 2012.

The court issued 71 decisions on 301 applications, in 69 of which it uncovered at least one violation of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The rest were not considered because they did not meet the requirements or did not have legal force.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine occupied third place among the countries of the Council of Europe in 2011 in terms of the number of judgments that the European Court of Human Rights issued against it.
