Bomb blast rocks Manipur on Republic Day


Imphal: A bomb blast on Saturday marred the Republic Day celebrations in the state, with Governor Gurbachan Jagat appealing for peace in a troubled Manipur. Amid heavy security, Jagat hoisted the tricolour and took the salute at an impressive march past by police forces in the state capital.

According to police, a separatist group triggered an improvised explosive device blast near Wangbal in Thoubal district. However, no casualties were reported form the blast site. Speaking on the occasion, the governor called for enduring peace in the state.

Meanwhile, a Coordination Committee of seven major separatist outfits called for a boycott of the Republic Day.

Serial bomb blasts rocked the state capital on Friday as well, with the rebels targeting Manipur Rifles ground. However, no one was injured. The first explosion took place near a pond inside the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles campus here where the Republic Day parade is scheduled to be held tomorrow.

The second bomb explosion occurred near Keishamthong Longjam Leirak crematorium on the Nambul river bank in Imphal West district around 10.15 am followed by the third blast near Raja Dumbra High School crossing near Palace Gate traffic point under Imphal East district around 10.30 am.
