Curfew lifted in Srinagar as peace returns

Srinagar: A three-day-old curfew imposed in parts of Srinagar following sectarian clashes was lifted today.

"Curfew has been lifted from all nine police station areas of Srinagar city as the situation is peaceful," a police spokesperson said.

With the lifting of the curfew, normal life resumed in all parts of the city. Schools, colleges, shops, offices and business establishments opened.

Examinations being conducted by the University of Kashmir were also held today after two days. Exams scheduled for Thursday and Friday had been cancelled and will be held at a later date.

Curfew was declared in Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Rainawari, Nigeen, Lal Bazaar, Zadibal and Parimpora police station limits on Wednesday after sectarian clashes broke out in Hawal area of the city.

Hawal, Gojwara and adjoining areas have become flashpoints of sectarian violence in the past couple of years during Muharram processions.
