Brazil police launch anti-crime operation

PressTV -
Brazilian police in the city of Sao Paulo have launched a key anti-crime operation aimed at reducing major offenses, following a rise in killings in the area.

"Operation Saturation" was carried out on Monday in the city's southern Paraisopolis favela of 80,000 people, with the intention of "choking off soaring drug trafficking" and reducing the number of robberies and thefts, said the state secretary for public security Antonio Ferreira Pinto.

A heavily-armed military police force has been deployed to the area which is located adjacent to the more affluent Morumbi district.

On Monday, at least 10 people were gunned down in Sao Paulo and another was killed in Sao Bernardo do Campo. At least 40 people have died in shootings since Thursday.

In September, the number of murders in the area rose to 144, up from 71 during the same month last year.

Experts say at least 80 police officers have been murdered in the region this year.

The crackdown is expected to last for an undetermined period of time, which may also extend to other districts of Brazil's business capital with a population of 20 million people.
