Syrian rebels urge foreign military intervention

Armed groups fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have called for foreign military intervention in the country even without the approval of the United Nations Security Council.

In a video posted online on Thursday, head of the rebel Free Syrian Army General Mustafa Ahmed al-Sheikh called for "the formation of a military alliance of countries friendly to the Syrian people, without UN Security Council approval, to carry out surgical strikes on key installations of the regime," AFP reported.

He also accused Damascus of violating the ceasefire brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

Rebels' call for military intervention comes as 12 anti-Syrian countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and France, are holding a ministerial meeting in Paris.

Russia, who has boycotted the third gathering of the so-called ''Friends of Syria'', says the meeting aims at fueling unrest in Syria rather than finding a solution.

The meeting is aimed "at deepening the contradictions between the opposition and Damascus by promoting the international isolation of the latter," Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Syrian government and UN have signed a deal outlining the functions of the observing mission and Damascus’ responsibilities regarding implementation of the country's ceasefire.

According to a spokesman for Annan, Damascus has also agreed with the deployment of more observers.
