Security volunteer slain in Pattani

A security volunteer was killed in a driveby shooting in Pattani's Muang district on Monday morning, Muang Pattani police station chief Somporn Meesuk said.

Pol Col Somporn said Sulkiplee Tahae, 46, was hit by bullets several times in the head and torso while driving his motorcycle to his assignment at a school.

At least 10 spent cartridge shells from an M16 assault rifle and a .38 revolver were found at the scene.

The attackers fled after the shooting.

Police blamed insurgents.

More than 5,000 people have been killed and over 8,400 hurt in the three southern border provinces and the four districts of Songkhla since violence erupted in January 2004, according to Deep South Watch -- an agency that monitors the conflict in the far South.

Last month, a total of 56 people were killed and 547 wounded in insurgency-related violence in the region.
