London police closed off an area of central London and evacuated offices amid reports an unidentified man threatening to blow himself up has taken hostages in a nearby building.
Police were called at 11:59 a.m. London time today to an office building on Tottenham Court Road, Emma Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police, said in an e-mailed response to questions.
The suspect has been seen throwing items out of the fifth- floor window and a 100 meter (328 feet) cordon has been put into place around the area, Taylor said in the statement. A negotiator has arrived on the scene to establish a dialog with the man, Sky News TV reported, citing police officials.
The suspect appears to have objects strapped to his body that the man identified as gasoline cannisters, Sky said, citing witnesses on the scene, located between Goodge Street and Euston Road.
