NARATHIWAT : An assistant village head was shot dead yesterday in a drive-by shooting on the Pa Phai-Cho Airong road in Cho Airong district, police said.

Piak Chuenban, 40, assistant village head of Ban Tanyong Limo, was found dead near his motorcycle after being shot by a gunman riding pillion in tambon Chuap.

Earlier the victim, carrying a rifle and a 9mm pistol, had driven his motorcycle from his home in Rangae district to go hunting in a nearby forest, police said.

He was followed by two men on a motorcycle who fired at him with an assault rifle.

One of the attackers took one of Piak's guns after shooting him and fled.

Police found 10 spent cartridges near Piak's body.

In Pattani's Panare district, about 300 police and military officers yesterday raided a private Islamic school in tambon Phoming. Authorities suspected the school was being used as a weapons store by insurgents.

Teachers took them around the school's compound and dormitories.

Among the items found were 24 cooking gas cylinders and two bags of urea fertiliser used to nurture rubber trees. No firearms were discovered.

Meanwhile, deputy national police chief Suwat Chanitthikun paid a visit to the Southern Border Provinces Operation Centre in Yala's Muang district yesterday to discuss security issues with local authorities. Pol Gen Suwat ordered them to tighten security to prevent insurgents from committing atrocities to coincide with the 8th anniversary of the Krue Se mosque massacre in Pattani tomorrow.
