Kasab a terrorist, must be hanged, says Malik

ADDU (Maldives): Rejecting allegations of harbouring Osama bin Laden in Pakistan and providing support to militants, Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that Ajmal Kasab is a terrorist and he should be sent to the gallows.

Talking to the media at the Shangrila resort in Villingli, an island of Addu city, Malik said on Thursday that Kasab was a non-state actor who should be hanged for his crime. "We felt the same pain caused by the acts of Kasab which we felt after the Samjhota Express tragedy.

"We have suffered the most at the hands of terrorists; 36,000 people of my country have fallen victims to terrorism," the interior minister said while responding to queries of journalists at the meeting venue.

Stressing focus on "credible evidence", Malik said the government was awaiting a visit of the Judicial Commission to India and get some evidence that could help in prosecuting the accused in his country.

About allegations of Pakistan sheltering Osama bin Laden, Malik said the charges were far from reality. "Osama was never provided shelter in Pakistan," said Malik. He said Osama was trained by the American CIA and Pakistan's ISI in the past and he was well aware of Pakistan's areas and he knew how to hide here. He said it wasn't easy to eliminate every terrorist but what was important to defeat this specific mindset.

About the dialogue process between Pakistan and India, Rehman Malik said both the countries had a long way to go together in mutual interest and stated there had clearly been some positive indicators of the dialogue process.

About allegations of Pakistan's support to Jamaatud Dawa (JuD), Rehman Malik said charges should be proved with evidence and mere claims and information did not mean evidence. Agencies add: About the release of JuD leader Hafiz Saeed, he said, "He was bailed out by the highest court of Pakistan (for lack of evidence) and the government can't do anything about it."

He said Pakistan's High Commissioner Shahid Malik had conveyed to Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram that the Pakistani government would soon be sending a judicial commission to take forward the process of bringing to justice the perpetrators and conspirators of the Mumbai carnage.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Rehman Malik met his Maldivian counterpart Hassan Afif and discussed matters of mutual interest with him. Malik said Pakistan considers relations with Maldives of utmost importance and those would be strengthened in future. Hassan Afif said his country gives special importance to relations with Pakistan. He said Maldives appreciates Pakistan's role in the fight against terrorism.
