Troops foil terror attack in Cotabato

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) -- Security forces on Sunday foiled a terror attack of suspected Muslim militants in the southern Philippines, police said.

Residents discovered a powerful homemade bomb fashioned from an 81-millimeter mortar shell in front of a government office in the southern Philippine city of Cotabato and immediately reported to police, said police commander Senior Superintendent Roberto Badian.

Bomb experts rushed to the scene and defused the bomb, Badian added.

On Saturday, an explosion hit the city but caused no casualties.

No group claimed responsibility for the twin incidents, but authorities blamed Muslim rebels in previous attacks in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao.

Chinese spying on Dutch industries 'intensifying': Dutch defence minister

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Chinese efforts to spy on the Dutch are intensifying, with the focus on semiconductors, Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said on Saturday. Kabul: Five members of the US-led international military coalition were killed on Saturday by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan, the latest deadly attack against foreign troops since the Taliban announced the start of their spring offensive this week. The renewed violence came as Afghan President Hamid Karzai acknowledged that his government has been receiving funds from CIA for more than a decade as part of regular monthly assistance from the US government.
