Anti-Maoist ops at Saranda yield 200kg explosives

RANCHI: Seventeen suspected Naxalites, including four women, were detained and over 200kg explosives seized in an anti-Maoist operation at the Saranda forest in West Singhbhum. Three rebel camps were also busted during the offensive that ended on Wednesday.

The three-day exercise was launched in Saranda, considered the biggest sal forest of Asia, after arrested Maoist Nirmal Jharia tipped the security forces on June 18 off about rebel training camps being run in the
jungle.

The three camps were being run led by senior leaders of Eastern Regional Bureau (ERB) of the CPI (Maoist) deep in the forest located around 25km off Chota Nagra police station of West Singhbhum. "The camps were situated at an interval of 4.5 kilometers and one of the camps at Chanderdera village even had permanent concrete structure separate for men and women. It has jumping and target practice fields also," said West Singhbhum SP Arun Kumar Singh.

Near Baliba village, police seized 200kg gelatin sticks hidden in a dump along with 50 bundles of codex wires, barbed wire and other materials used for improvised explosive devices.

"At Baliba, police also recovered 50 quintals of grains, potatoes, chocolates, biscuits, utensils for nearly 150 people, 50 jute bags, as many uniforms, two rifles and a huge number of ammunition," said CRPF DIG Bhanu Pratap Singh adding that the details of the exact amount of seizure could only be ascertained once the personnel return from the operation.

The CRPF officer said the grains were distributed to the villagers as it was not possible to carry the sacks for over 20 kilometers, a distance travelled by the security personnel on foot.

Large bags containing Naxalite literature that included jungle warfare training booklets were also found in the camps. "The camps were run under the guidance of ERB member Anmol Da alias Sammarji and other senior members," said West Singhbhum SP Arun Kumar Singh. "A total of 17 suspected Maoists, including four women, were detained by the security forces and are being interrogated."

the CRPF DIG said Anmol Da and other leaders of the Maoists managed to flee taking advantage of dense forest but the security forces successfully busted three of their well settled camps set up deep in the forest.

The operation team comprising jawans from CoBRA battalions, district police and Jharkhand Armed Police faced resistance as the Maoists fired on them and engaged them in an encounter near Chadra village on Tuesday evening. The offensive was launched on June 26 midnight.
