No armed cadres in CPI (M) camps, Buddha to PC

Source: Headlines today
No armed CPI (M) cadres or supporters are sheltered in the camps set up by the party in Bengal's three Maoist-dominated districts, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has informed union home minister P Chidambaram in a letter faxed on Tuesday morning. State secretariat sources claimed
Bhattacharjee also alleged in his reply that the number of Left supporters who have fallen to Maoist violence as mentioned in Chidambaram's December 21 letter is lower than the actual figure.

Bhattacharjee himself remained mum on the contents merely saying, "The reply has been sent. The contents will be revealed at an appropriate time."

The grapevine at the chief minister's secretariat indicated Bhattacharjee has reiterated that the government has proof of Trinamool's ties with the Maoists, an allegation that he and other CPI (M) leaders have been harping on for the past several months.

Bhattacharjee is also supposed to have gone on the offensive and asked why are the central forces (that are under the command of the union home ministry) deployed there are not destroying the camps, if armed goons are sheltered there.

The mode of reply (fax) was also significant. The traditional route in an envelope purportedly sent Chidambaram's letter as it was marked "secret", home ministry officials in New Delhi had claimed on Monday. A reply was also sent by speed post.

The tone and tenor of Bhattacharjee's response could be gauged from what CPI (M) state secretary Biman Bose had said on Monday. He questioned how such a sensitive letter could be leaked to the media before it reached the addressee and how the home minister could use the word 'harmad' in an official communication.

Chidambaram had written, "Up to December 15, 2010, TMC cadres who have been killed and injured number 96 and 1,237 respectively. Likewise, CPI (M) cadres who have been killed and injured number 65 and 773 respectively."

Bose had retorted claiming a far higher number for Left casualties. He had said, "After the Lok Sabha polls 337 Left supporters have been killed in the state. Among them 222 are only from the three Maoist-affected districts, 120 of whom are tribals."

The home minister's letter had stung the CPI(M) leadership with Bhattacharjee saying in a public rally on Monday that he would give a "fitting reply."
