Ten members of a medical team, including six Americans, were shot and killed by militants as they were returning from providing eye treatment and other health care in remote villages of northern Afghanistan, a spokesman for the team said Saturday.
Dirk Frans, director of the International Assistance Mission, said one German, one Briton and two Afghans also were a part of the team that made the two-week trip to Nuristan province. They drove to the province, left their vehicles and hiked for hours over mountainous terrain to reach the Parun valley in the province's northwest.

Frans said the International Assistance Mission is registered as a non-profit Christian organization but it does not proselytize.
"This tragedy negatively impacts our ability to continue serving the Afghan people as IAM has been doing since 1966," the charity said in a statement. "We hope it will not stop our work that benefits over a quarter of a million Afghans each year."

Dr. Tom Grams, 51, grew up in Park Rapids and graduated from high school there in 1977. He received his doctorate in dentistry from the University of Minnesota.
Tim Grams is the dentist's twin brother. Grams said his brother loved to help people.
"He loved to travel. He liked to go into other cultures and experience their cultures," Tim Grams said. "He respected the local people and their ways, and he wasn't trying to change anybody, except improve their dental health care."
Tim Grams said his brother was a shrewd businessman who was able to retire before he turned 50.

The British Government today confirmed the murder of a British female doctor in Northern Afghanistan.
Dr Karen Woo “was killed with a number of other health aid workers” in a “deplorable and cowardly act,” Foreign Secretary William Hague said in an e-mailed statement.
Woo’s death was “against the interests of the people of Afghanistan who depended on the services she was bravely helping to provide,” Hague said.
