Bhubaneswar/Ranchi/Patna: Maoists went on the rampage in Orissa, Jharkhand and Bihar early on Tuesday, blowing up a railway station and a community centre along with torching over a dozen vehicles.
Since Monday, the Red rebels have been observing a 48-hour bandh in these three states along with West Bengal and Chhattisgarh in protest against the 'illegal detention' of two of their top leaders. Amid widespread violence, Jharkhand Police on Tuesday produced the Maoist duo -- identified as Anil and Kartik -- in a Ranchi court. Earlier, they had denied having taken them into custody.
"We had called the bandh to force the police to admit that they had arrested two of our comrades and produce them in court by 5 pm on Tuesday. But they did it an hour before the deadline. Hence, we are calling off the bandh," said Kishanji, CPI(Maoist) politburo member.
Late on Monday night, the Maoists reduced Roxi railway station, about 60 km from Rourkela in Orissa, to rubble with landmines. They also tried to blow up Bhalulata station, about 35 km from Roxi. There, they also abducted two employees. At Roxi, the Maoists kidnapped the station master and two other employees and planted mines there. Within minutes, the station building was blown up. The rebels then set ablaze eight dumpers parked outside the station, police said.
"They kept us hostage for about six hours and freed us in the morning. They said we would be in trouble if we did not follow their bandh call," Roxi assistant station master Arbind Kumar said.
Reports reaching the East Coast Railway said the rebels damaged and took away nearly 15 metre of rail tracks between Dantewada and Kamlur stations in Chhattisgarh. In Ranchi, the rebels injured two cops and torched four trucks coming from AP with vegetables on NH-33 under Bundu police station. Latehar SP Kuldeep Diwedi said about 20-25 Maoists blasted a mobile tower of a private company at Lali village under Manika PS. On Monday, the rebels had blown up railway tracks between Hehegara and Kumandi stations in Latehar district.
In Bihar, Maoists blew up a newly built community centre at Akri village in Aurangabad district on Monday night.
