A blog that claims responsibility for the Jakarta hotel bombings has been inundated with messages from ordinary Indonesians condemning the attacks and the alleged mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top.

Nine people, including New Zealand businessman Tim Mackay, were killed in the attacks on the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in the Indonesian capital on July 17.

Nine days later a statement appeared online, purportedly from Top, who leads a violent splinter group of terrorist outfit Jemaah Islamiah.

Police are investigating the authenticity of the statement, posted on Blogspot, which says the attacks were directed at American business interests and the Manchester United soccer team, which had planned to stay at the Ritz-Carlton.

Real or not, the statement has attracted tens of thousands of visitors, almost 2,000 of whom have posted messages in response.

The vast majority condemn the attacks.

"Get the hell away from Indonesia," says one, writing under the name Qwe.
