At least two policemen were killed and three others injured today in an attack on a police van here in the northwestern  Pakistani city of Peshawar.

The attackers lobbed grenades at the police van while the vehicle was patrolling the Inqilab Road in Peshawar early this morning. Two police officers were killed on the spot while three others were injured, officials said.

The injured were taken to hospital, where doctors said they were in a stable condition. Police registered a case against unknown assailants. Last night, a suspected militant blew himself up following a gun-battle between police and occupants of a car at Mashogagar on the outskirts of Peshawar. Policemen stopped the car after receiving a tip-off that it was carrying a would-be suicide bomber.

The five occupants of the car then opened fire at the police.
