Suicide bomber kills ten at army depot mosque

Peshawar—Yet another deadly blast during the Juma congregation, this time at a mosque in a military compound in Nowshera Friday left at least 8 worshippers dead and more the 90 others seriously injured. The medics at various hospitals have described the condition of many inured as precarious. It is feared that majority of the victims were the soldiers who had gathered to offer Juma prayer in the mosque situated at Army Supply depot. Some reports put the death toll at more than 10.

At least 40 worshippers were killed and more then 50 others received serious injuries when a suicide bomber struck a mosque in a remote village of Upper Dir during the congregation Friday last.

Several vehicles parked in the vicinity were also destroyed. A few women in the nearby hospital also sustained injuries. The windowpanes of nearby buildings were smashed into pieces and human flesh and blood lay scattered in the mosque.

The roof of the mosque was razed to ground due to high intensity of the blast. Several worshipers were trapped under the debris, the eye witnesses said.

The locals and the men in uniform rushed to the site of the blast to carry out rescue operation as the debris was removed with the help of lifters and cranes.

The police and volunteers shifted the injured to CMH and DHQ hospital. According to hospital sources seven others succumbed to their injuries. Emergency was declared in district hospital. The Police and army personnel cordoned off the area allowing no body getting close to the site of the blast. The Police sources said the bomb weighed 125 kilogram. On the other hand the Tehreek-e-Taliban Aurakzai agency has reportedly owned the responsibility of the blast at Jamia Naeemia Lahore and at the army mosque in Nowshehra saying that was in response to the ongoing military operation in Swat , Bannu and the tribal areas.

The Chief Minister NWFP Ameer Haider Khan Hoti strongly condemned attack on innocent people in the mosque and termed it un-Islamic and inhuman.

Expressing his deep shock and sorrow over the death of innocent people in the deadly explosion, the Chief Minister ordered immediate inquiry of the incident and directed the hospital administration to provide full medical facilities to the victims.

“The elements involved in such kinds of cowardly acts in mosques are in fact the enemies of humanity and religion but such acts could not deter the government and people in the fight against militancy and terrorism,” the chief minister said vowing that they would be wiped out.
