In view of the ‘threat perception’ during the Commonwealth Games, city doctors are being trained for eventualities like bio-terrorism and nuclear attack.

The trauma centre of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is hosting experts at a three-day workshop on emergency medical response to Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) casualties.

“Doctors are being trained to deal with casualties in case there are CBRN terrorist attacks. Both civilian and military doctors are being trained,” Dr M C Mishra, head at the AIIIMS Trauma Centre, said.

Speaking about the preparations for the event, N Balachandran, Special Secretary (Health), Delhi government, said three hospitals were being specially equipped with the latest equipment. Besides, he added, their facilities were being spruced up to handle mass casualties, if any.

“September-October 2010 will witness a lot of movement of foreigners in the Capital. AIIMS, Ram Manohar Lohia and G B Pant Hospitals are being readied for the Games,” Balachandran said. “In case of bomb blasts, people rescue victims. But if it is a biological, chemical, radiological or nuclear attack, one should keep away from the victims.”

Besides the doctors, people should also know how to deal with such crisis and casualties, Dr W Selvamurty, a scientist with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), said.

Rs 60 crore for new street lights
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will install new street lights on 50 major roads ahead of the Commonwealth Games. The corporation will spend Rs 60.74 crore on 157 kilometres of roads. “After completing the project, the MCD will hand it over to the Discoms for maintenance,” MCD Standing Committee Chairman Ram Kishan Singhal said. This will be the second phase of upgrading streetlights on MCD roads. The first phase began in July 2008 and is expected to be completed in July this year.
