As a peace worker, I found today’s exhibition in Pune very discomforting. We all know about the breaking of temples by Moghul kings, but does it have to be spelled out so vividly to our present generation? How can we foster values of communal harmony and peace if we continue to dwell on the violent past. How will we have forgiveness and reconciliation if we keep opening old wounds especially in an India which has recently seen so much communal tension and riots? How will we break stereotypes which the western media has created that Muslims are terrorists and Islam teaches only revenge? Indian history and culture has so many examples of tolerance, peace and social harmony; besides it is not only the history of invading kings and despots. If FACT is going to have a museum in Pune, let it be a peace museum that will promote values of brotherhood and peace which is so much part of Indian culture and tradition.
