Militants asks Kashmiri girls to observe purdah or face consequences

Girls beware! Next time you will be seen without purdah (veil), you may have to face the wrath of militantsin south Kashmir. Handwritten posters of Hizbul Mujahidin have surfaced in Pulwama town of South Kashmir cautioning the management of schools against not observing purdah by the girl students.

Militants have also set a 24 hours deadline for the beauty parlours to shut their businesses or be ready to face the consequences. Written in Urdu on the letter head of Hizbul with a stamp, the threat posters have also warned people against immorality like drug abuse and alcoholism.

"We appeal to the management of the schools to ask the girls to observe purdah in Pulwama. We are also giving 24 hours ultimatum to all the beauty parlours to shut their shops. Failing which they shall be responsible for dangerous consequences," reads the English translation of the Hizbul threat posters.

Hizbul militants have also asked the youth to stay away from the "immoral acts" in Pulwama district. "There are people who are addicted to liquor, charas and other drug abuse in Karimabad, Newah, Jadoora, Wahibug and Kalaan villages. We ask these people to stay away from these immoral activities forthwith," reads the posters.

Police have taken the posters very seriously and put the investigation on the fast track to reach to the bottom of the case. "We are looking into it who has pasted these posters. Investigation is on," Tejinder Singh, senior superintendent of police, Pulwama, told dna

It is not the first time militants have embarked on a moral policing in Kashmir. Similar Hizbul posters had sprung up in Baramulla in 2013 warning the youth particularly girls against wearing "western clothes, surfing net and watching films and television soaps".

A hitherto unknown militant group "Lashkar al Qaeda" and "al Qaeda Mujahideen" in 2012 had asked Kashmiri girls to observe purdah (veil) and shun using mobile phones or else they will allegedly be "killed or disfigured by acid" in south Kashmir district of Shopian.
