Militant Insurgency Has Reduced In Some Parts of The North- General Wahab

The General Officer Commanding, 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Garba Wahab said on Friday that the spate of bombings and other terrorist attacks in some parts of the north is reducing drastically due to the efforts and commitment of military and other joint security personnel operations in the region.

He said that peace and security is returning to some of the states where the Boko Haram insurgency was earlier on the high side which he said could be testified by members of the public.

He stated this at the combined graduation ceremony of the 223 battalion pre-deployment training and train the trainers for army medical personnel at the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre, Jaji, Kaduna.

Addressing the troops who completed their four-week pre-deployment training at the centre, General Wahab warned members of the Nigerian contingent for peacekeeping operation in Darfur that they risk severe sanctions if any of them is found culpable violating the cultural and religious beliefs of the people of Sudan.

The GOC said that officers who are caught involved in untoward acts like rape and alcoholism risk being court marshalled.

800 personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces had undergone a four-week pre-deployment training at the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre.

Commandant for the centre, Major General Salihu Uba said the training was part of the army’s effort to inject quality in the troops deployed on UN peacekeeping missions to various parts of the world.

He urged the personnel, who comprised of 800 combatant soldiers and 90 medical personnel to display high standard in their conduct.

Nigerian troops have played this role in the past in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone and South Africa since 1960.

The Commanding Officer of the 223 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Ishaya Maina assured the GOC that the troop will live up to expectations while in Dafur.
