Police, target of Belfast bomb blast

Northern Irish police have confirmed a bomb blast near officers on patrol in the capital Belfast on Saturday was designed to kill the police and is being treated as murder.

Three officers narrowly escaped harm in the explosion in the Hazelbank area of north Belfast.

The three were dispatched to the area after the police received a phone-call that needed examination.

The incident led to a 24-hour security alert in the area as officers and army bomb disposal experts searched the vicinity for other threats.

"Police can confirm that an explosive device detonated,” a spokeswoman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.

"It is believed the target was police officers and police are now treating it as attempted murder,” she added.

Saturday also saw the police deal with another security alert over a second device in Belfast, which was declared a hoax after army bomb experts make it safe through a controlled explosion.
