Senior security official killed in Iraq

A local anti-terrorism security chief was killed Thursday in a bomb attack north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the police said, dpa reported.

An explosive device was placed in the car of Colonel Ismail al-Jaburi, in the northern area of al-Sharqat, and killed him on impact. His driver was injured.

Iraq has seen a recent increase in such attacks, raising fears of a return to the kind of violence that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when thousands were killed in sectarian violence.

At least 325 people were killed in attacks in Iraq in July alone, making it the highest monthly toll since August 2010, according to government figures.
