MGK: Supporters of terrorism are responsible for results

Counterterrorism and, in this regard, Iraq were some of the major themes on the National Security Council’s (MGK) agenda in yesterday’s meeting in Ankara.

A written statement released after the meeting noted that Turkey, placing great importance on the territorial integrity of Iraq, kept a close watch on what is happening, and on the probable risks and dangers in Iraq.

The MGK statement regarding Iraq was as follows: “Through the High-level Strategic Cooperation Council mechanism Turkey wants to develop relations with Iraq in all areas.” MGK, announcing that it was necessary to establish concrete cooperation with Iraq in the area of counterterrorism, has made it clear that Turkey wants the Iraqi government to not tolerate the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) operating from Iraqi soil.

At the council meeting, during which the results of the military operation conducted in southeastern Turkey was also discussed, the groups and countries supporting the terrorist activities in Turkey were criticized. In the statement, which asserted that terrorism, itself being a crime against humanity, had no valid and justifiable ground, it was also stressed that those who support the PKK, offer logistic support, encourage terrorism, or let the PKK operate freely, would also be responsible for the negative outcome that acts of terrorism would cause. The council also added that Turkey expected friendly and allied countries to prevent the PKK from operating, to take required measures to block the financial resources of terrorism and to support Turkey in its fight against terrorism.

The statement also drew attention to the fact that the recent terrorist attacks, which targeted not only security forces, public officials, but also all citizens including women and children, have demonstrated once again the real face, ferocious and ruthless, of the PKK to the whole world.

The statement continues as follows: “On the other hand, the extensive social, economic, cultural, psychological and diplomatic efforts carried out in order to do improve the rights of Kurds, nullifying the Raison d’être of the PKK, will continue adamantly, with all the resources and capabilities of the state being directed to this end, and without making any concessions in the area of democracy, the rule of law and the universal values.”

Another point in the MGK statement that was stressed was that counterterrorism required patience and common sense. In the statement it was noted that in the struggle against terrorism it was of great importance for the media, civil society organizations, political parties and opinion leaders to adopt a common discourse and attitude against terrorism. The MGK also said that people’s unity and feelings of brotherhood would suffice to counter the harmful effects of any dirty conspiracy and would thwart the plans of the terrorist organization.

The MGK statement also touched on the developments in Syria. It was announced in the written statement that the violence and the intimidation policy causes much sorrow and discomfort on the Turkish side. The MGK, stressing the need for Syria to start the democratization process without losing any more time, said that, in the face of the continuing violent repression in Syria, Turkey was evaluating the steps to be taken at the national and international level.

It was also noted in the MGK statement that Southern Cyprus’s decision to start drilling for oil and natural gas in the Mediterranean would only serve to make a solution to the Cyprus problem more difficult, but would also increase the tension between the countries. The council also offered condolences to the relatives of the quake victims, as well as expressing its appreciation of all search and rescue teams in the area, and to the international community which put in efforts to help the people in the region.
