500 Policemen Graduate From Nigeria’s Counter Terrorism School
500 police officers of the Anti-terrorism and Insurgency Centre of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI) have graduated on Friday after a counter terrorism training in Jaji in northern Kaduna State of Nigeria.Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Hafiz Ringim, said at the ceremony that the training was aimed at addressing the insecurity situation in the country.
Ringim, who was represented by Mr Emeka Okeke, a commissioner of police in charge of training, said that more than 1,000 police officers were receiving training at the Army School of Intelligence, Lagos.
He commended the inter agency cooperation existing between the police and the army, saying that it would strengthen internal security.
Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Onyeabor Ihejirika, who spoke at the ceremony, commended the trainees for their endurance.
He urged them to improve on the knowledge they had acquired, stressing that the course was a condensed version of the real course.
Ihejirika expressed regret that terrorism had become a global phenomenon without geographical barriers, adding that the training of police officers was necessary following recent bombings in the country.
He condemned the 1993 hijacking of an airbus belonging to the defunct Nigerian Airways, the bombing of the Aminu Kano International Airport, Durbar Hotel in Kaduna as well as the recent bombings in Abuja.
In his speech, the Acting Commandant, NASI, Brig.-Gen. Sani Bello, said the trainees were drilled on how to employ various techniques to counter terrorism and insurgency.
He said the trainees, comprising six officers, including two ladies and 494 personnel from the other ranks, were fit and ready for deployment.
Bello said the police personnel were trained by army instructors and equipped with the basic requirements for fighting against terrorism.
The officers were trained in weapon handling, obstacle crossing, bus rescue, propelling and house rescue operations.
